Through a large 19th century house and its grounds, the camera follows an art collector and an unseen interviewer. The collector has six of seven canvasses by a 19th century painter called Fredéric Tonnerre, but nobody knows what was in the fourth of the sequence because it was stolen. His quest is to recreate the missing painting and so to read the meaning of the whole series. To achieve this, he has hired models, acquired props and rigged up lighting in order to re-enact each of the six surviving scenes as a tableau vivant. Able to walk around each tableau and to adjust the light, he ponders the inner significance of the scene, speculating why the artist chose to portray it in exactly that way and what message he was signalling to the alert viewer..Tableaux we see include Diana surprised by Actaeon, Templars playing chess, a scandal among Parisian nobility, and an occult ceremony involving a sacrifice similar to that of St Sebastian. In each case the collector discerns strong sexual currents flowing between the characters, both heterosexual and homosexual. More significant, he thinks traces of an esoteric cult of Baphomet are to be seen in the pictures.

1941. L'Allemagne nazie étend son pouvoir dictatorial à travers l'europe . Pour distraire et réconforter les officiers mobilisés sur le front de l'Europe de l'est, le SS Otto Kramer, proche d'Hitler, décide de mettre en place un réseau de call-girls aryennes. Elles embarqueront dans un train spécial transformé en bordel qui sillonnera l'Europe. À leur tête, Kramer engage sa maîtresse Ingrid Schüler, une chanteuse et danseuse de cabaret en vogue et dotée d'un solide réseau de connaissances dans le parti nazi. Promue capitaine, elle forme aussitôt une équipe spéciale de prostituées, destinées à remonter le moral des soldats du IIIème Reich. Mais la tension est vive à bord du train : Rita, l'une d'entre elles, ne supporte pas la discipline de fer d'Ingrid, femme perfide et autoritaire. Elles n'ont pas d'autre choix que d'assouvir les fantasmes tordus et violents des SS sous peine d'être réprimandées par leur maquerelle. Au fil des années, leur effectif est renforcé d'un groupe de condamnées, coupables d'un complot raté contre Hitler. Parmi elles, Ingrid reconnaît son amie d'enfance Helga dont le père a été exécuté pour trahison. Jusqu'au jour où des partisans polonais envahissent le train pour humilier Ingrid. Elle est sauvée par l'officier allemand Paul Gruhn dont elle tombe amoureuse. Mais ce dernier est séduit par Helga, une autre fille de joie du convoi. Mais Ingrid et ses call-girls, aidés par Gruhn, vont devoir se défendre contre l'attaque des polonais et des Américains qui cherchent à détruire le train.

In Paris, bloodthirsty jewel thief Roger Sartet (Alain Delon) escapes from custody with the help of the Manalese, a small-time but well-organised Sicilian Mafia clan led by patriarch Vittorio (Jean Gabin) and which includes his sons Aldo (Yves Lefebvre) and Sergio (Marc Porel) and son-in-law Luigi (Philippe Baronnet). While in prison, Sartet got to know an electrician (Christian de Tillière) who was involved in the setting up of an extensive security system at a diamond exhibition in Rome — the electrician returned home early, unannounced, caught his wife in bed with a lover and shot them. L'ingénieur et patron Albert Raynal consacre sa vie à la recherche aéronautique. Il vient de mettre au point un statoréacteur. Le lancement réussit mais, hélas, la fusée explose en vol. Cet échec retentissant va lui attirer les plus grandes difficultés financières et familiales. Son beau-frère, Jérôme Laprade, confie à Christine, l'épouse de l'industriel, qu'il en a assez des fantaisies de son mari. Il lui suggère même de divorcer pour préserver l'avenir financier de ses deux grands fils, que les échecs de leur père pourraient compromettre. Mais Albert Raynal, force de la nature, ne s'estime pas vaincu pour autant. Bien qu'il lui en coûte, il tente auprès d'amis et de relations des démarches afin de réunir les capitaux indispensables pour sauver son laboratoire et poursuivre ses recherches. Mais tous restent insensibles à son appel, même la belle Rolande, riche restauratrice, ancienne maîtresse de Raynal, qui refuse d'hypothéquer son restaurant. Après une fugue en Normandie, Raynal réapparait et veut se constituer prisonnier pour chèque sans provision. Mais Christine, par un revirement émouvant, renonce à sa demande de divorce et vend des actions, sauvant ainsi son mari de la faillite et lui permettant de poursuivre ses travaux.

Summer 1941. Over Nazi-occupied France, a Royal Air Force B17 Flying Fortress becomes lost after a mission and is shot down over Paris by German flak. The crew, Sir Reginald, Peter Cunningham and Alan MacIntosh, parachute out over the city, where they run into and are hidden by a house painter, Augustin Bouvet, and the grumbling conductor of the Opéra National de Paris, Stanislas Lefort. Involuntarily, Lefort and Bouvet get themselves tangled up in the manhunt against the aviators led by Wehrmacht Major Achbach as they help the airmen to escape to the free zone with the help of Resistance fighters and sympathisers.

Près de la gare du Nord, un inconnu a été blessé par des tueurs en automobile. Quand la police survient, la victime a disparu.
