In 1954 in Freedom, a fictional small Kansas town, Evelyn Wyckoff, a lonely and greatly depressed 35-year-old high-school Latin teacher, no longer finds any satisfaction in her work, in spite of being well-liked by students and colleagues. Attractive but still a virgin, on the verge of premature menopause, her physician Dr. Neal thinks her problems would be solved if she got a love life. He directs her to Dr. Steiner, a Jewish psychiatrist in Wichita. The talks with Steiner help her to alleviate her grief and slowly she acknowledges her craving for love. She starts flirting with Ed Eckles, the friendly bus driver in her trips to Wichita. Ed cares for her and suggests they should have a love affair. She was hesitant about that because Ed was married and of a lower status. When she finally was willing to, Ed had left town for good and she felt distraught.

Roy, an aspiring actor, reaches a dilemma in his career. She meets the young Trevor; a man who persuades him to follow his heart and become a woman. Trevor himself used to be a girl called Gertrude, but had a fake penis implanted and breast reductions. Roy becomes Wendy, and gets with Frank. Frank secretly love Trevor, as he was Gertrude's Childhood sweetheart, in Alabama. Roy's father, who is now Wendy's father, runs away to escape the madness of the situation. Shirley follows him, and joins him in his downward spiral of drug using and alcohol. Mr Waites and Margaret Stephenson try and talk to Frank to tell him Gertrude is no longer the woman she was, and that he should love Wendy for who she is. At the end of the film, Trevor reveals that he was a man all along, and when he was younger he just wore a crudely made orange wig to fool Frank.

Jill Banford and Ellen March struggle to support themselves by raising chickens on an isolated farm in rural Canada. Working class cockney teenagers Dot (Rita Tushingham) and biker Reggie (Colin Campbell) get married. Their marriage soon turns sour. During an unsuccessful honeymoon at a holiday camp Reggie becomes alienated from the brassy and self-absorbed Dot. Afterwards, they begin to live increasingly separate lives as Reggie becomes more involved with his biker friends, especially the eccentric Pete (Dudley Sutton). Reggie also loses interest in having sex with Dot. When Reggie's grandfather dies, Dot merely complains that his support for his bereaved grandmother (Gladys Henson) has stopped them visiting the cinema. Her boorish behaviour at the funeral and her refusal to move in with Reggie's grandmother leads to a major argument. She leaves and Reggie stays with his gran, who will not leave her own house. He brings in Pete, who has been forced to leave his lodgings, to stay as a lodger with her. The two share a bed at her house. Meanwhile Dot shows an interest in Brian (Johnny Briggs), another biker. The following day Pete and Reggie drive to the seaside. Reggie wants them to chat up a couple of girls, but Pete shows no interest.

Returning from a cricket match in Ireland, Peter Weston, an Englishman, is left a pet alligator by another passenger who abandons it to him. The film is about an US singer named Bobby Denver, who is known as the "Crying Crooner" (a la Johnnie Ray), who stays with a stockbroker's family by mistake when he comes to England.
