Richard Fryer (25 December 1894–9 Feb 1953), born Morris Kolsky, was a British-born Hollywood cinematographer.

Biography

Émigré en 1911 aux États-Unis (où il se fait connaître comme Richard Fryer), il y intègre l'industrie du cinéma et débute comme assistant cameraman sur un film muet de 1914. Puis il contribue comme chef opérateur à une trentaine de films américains (entre autres des westerns), le premier sorti en 1918.

Il collabore surtout à des serials dans les années 1930 (entretemps, il est naturalisé américain en 1928), dont Rustlers of Red Dog de Lew Landers (1935, avec Johnny Mack Brown et Joyce Compton) et Flash Gordon de Frederick Stephani et Ray Taylor (1936, avec Buster Crabbe dans le rôle-titre et Charles Middleton).

Ses deux derniers longs métrages sont le film dramatique Une voix dans la tempête d'Arthur Ripley (avec Francis Lederer et Sigrid Gurie) et un ultime serial, Black Arrow de Lew Landers et B. Reeves Eason (avec Adele Jergens et Charles Middleton), sortis en 1944 ; ils sont suivis par un court métrage de 1946, après lequel il se retire.

Richard Fryer meurt prématurément en 1953, à 58 ans.

Aviator Dick Moreland uses his winnings from a recent flight to fund an expedition to recover treasure buried his pirate ancestor. However, Stanley Brasset, another member of Moreland's club, steals his map and sets out to find the treasure for himself. Dorothy Craig becomes involved when Dick needs her car to chase Brasset's henchmen and recover the map, which results in Dorothy being kidnapped and requiring rescue by Dick. When told of the treasure, Dorothy offers her father's yacht to take them to the island. Unable to retain the map, Brasset joins the expedition (his identity as the villain unknown to the protagonists) with henchmen hidden aboard. The henchmen are discovered and attempt to take over the ship en route to the Caribbean but this fails. Brasset releases them again after arrival to stop Dick from recovering the treasure. The treasure chest itself is empty and the search by the two parties continues on the island. Island natives eventually capture Brasset and his henchmen and plan to sacrifice them. Dick intervenes and they are brought back to America as prisoners.

Stanley Stanfield is the inventor of the Vanishing Ray, a wearable device which, when active, leaves only the user's shadow still visible. After meeting with a fellow scientist, Carl Van Dorn, a prototype is built. Stanley intends to sell bonds to finance his invention. He inherited them from his late father, an editor for the Tribune newspaper, but the stockbroker he meets is corruptly involved with Wade Barnett, the businessman who hounded Stanley's father to his death. Barnett wants the bonds and will go to any length to acquire them. A conflict ensues between Stanley and Barnett. However, Stanley's new girlfriend, Gloria Grant, is really Gloria Barnett, his enemy's estranged daughter. Neither hero nor villain wants to hurt Gloria and must work around this in their struggle. Many science fiction gadgets, including a robot and The Destroying Ray, also feature.

Pauline Hargraves (Evalyn Knapp) is the intrepid daughter of Professor Hargraves (James Durkin), a noted doctor of chemistry and archeology. During World War I, the pilots of an RFC squadron deal with the stress of combat primarily through nightly bouts of heavy drinking. On a ship sailing from England to India, Ann Church (Laura La Plante) meets young and dashing Major Anthony Seymour (Eugene O'Brien), falls in love and makes some innocent advances to gain his attentions. Ann is 19, but looks 15. The Major at first resists her advances because he believes she is that young, and later he holds back after learning that Ann's mother Muriel (Hedda Hopper) was a former girlfriend of his. Another passenger, Gilchrist (Jean Hersholt) who is a cad, takes advantage of Ann's naiveté and places her in a compromising position. To save her reputation, the Major proposes to Ann and she accepts. When they arrive in Bombay, Gilchrist gets even by telling Ann that the Major had had an affair with her mother, causing Ann to break the engagement. Angry, the Major follows Gilchrist off ship and thrashes him. As she prepares to return alonne to England, the Major forces Gilchrist to admit to Ann that the relationship between the Major and Ann's mother was platonic and never romantic. The young couple reunite and are later married at sea.
