La France sous l’Occupation. Exécutée pour trahison envers la Résistance, Cora, nom de code « La Chatte », avait été laissée pour morte. Récupérée et soignée par les Allemands, le docteur von Hollwitz, pratique sur elle un lavage de cerveau pour la contrôler et l’utiliser comme contre-espionne. Au printemps 1944, on simule son évasion pour qu’elle reprenne contact avec la Résistance. Elle doit faire capoter la mission de Charles, ingénieur à la SNCF, qui consiste à faire sauter un train chargé de V1 destinés à alimenter les rampes de lancement installées sur les côtes françaises pour bombarder Londres. Mais au dernier moment, La Chatte retrouve sa lucidité.

In a small town in the south of France, Dr. Valerio is committed to caring for the poor. His young wife, Angela, cannot stand the place and wants to move to Nice, but the doctor does not want to leave before finding a replacement. Valerio is sympathetic to the working poor of the area, particularly Sandro, a farm worker who maintains the trees belonging to Gorzone, a rich industrialist and the primary employer in the town. Angela becomes ill and wanders the town's slum quarters in a delirium, ultimately leaving the town for a holiday without her husband. The Commissioner of Police takes Valerio to a mountain village in order to sign medical reports for a little girl who had been raped by her grandfather. There, Valerio meets Clara, a rich young widow. He considers a menage a trois, but is rebuffed. Meanwhile, Sandro is dismissed by Gorzone, forcing Sandro and his tubercular wife, Magda, to leave their home, a move that results in Magda's death. Distracted by grief, Sandro shoots Gorzone. Valerio hides Sandro from the police, a decision that results in Angela leaving the doctor for good. Sandro leaves Valerio's protection and, when cornered by the authorities, shoots himself. Valerio refuses to shake hands with the Commissioner, and the last scene shows Valerio and Clara walking away at night, arm in arm on the quayside, followed by some of Sandro's cronies.

L'enseignant André Barret est de retour d'un pénible échec professionnel à Kandara, l'une des plus anciennes villes du Kenya construite pendant l'ère coloniale, à la fois en zone agricole et cependant dotée de collèges et établissements universitaires. Avec son épouse qui supporte mal cette situation, il obtient un poste en province à Loudun, petite ville du Centre-Ouest de la France. Un soir, le professeur entrevoit l'auteur d'un meurtre dans la pénombre; le cafetier Cordelec est la victime. Dès lors, ses soupçons se portent sur l'un de ses élèves qui vient d'arriver dans sa classe, Bernard Cormiere. La tension monte et le professeur se sent menacé. Le jeune homme tente d'attaquer Barret mais ce dernier réplique et parvient à blesser gravement son élève. Il va mourir mais parvient à accuser Barret du meurtre du cafetier avant de rendre l'âme. L'enquête se complique encore car le témoignage de son épouse est ambigu et laisse planer le doute d'un crime passionnel.

Léon lui offre une cigarette, et bien qu'il ne fume jamais, Faust l'accepte et, stupéfait, s'aperçoit qu'elle brûle sans se consumer. The entire film takes place over the course of three days.
