It is based on the novel by Albert Simonin. It was screened in competition at 1954 Venice Film Festival. The film was released in the United States as Grisbi and in the United Kingdom as Honour Among Thieves.
Synopsis
The entire film takes place over the course of three days. Max, a decent and principled gangster, has dinner at Madame Bouche's restaurant, a hangout for criminals, with his longtime associate Riton, their burlesque-dancer girlfriends, and his protege Marco. A newspaper is seen to mention eight bars of stolen gold. The group goes to Pierrot's nightclub, where the girls perform. Max gets Marco a job as a drug dealer working for Pierrot. After the show, Max finds Riton's girlfriend Josy making out with Angelo, another gangster.Actors

In Paris, bloodthirsty jewel thief Roger Sartet (Alain Delon) escapes from custody with the help of the Manalese, a small-time but well-organised Sicilian Mafia clan led by patriarch Vittorio (Jean Gabin) and which includes his sons Aldo (Yves Lefebvre) and Sergio (Marc Porel) and son-in-law Luigi (Philippe Baronnet). While in prison, Sartet got to know an electrician (Christian de Tillière) who was involved in the setting up of an extensive security system at a diamond exhibition in Rome — the electrician returned home early, unannounced, caught his wife in bed with a lover and shot them. Unaccustomed to prison life, he made friends with Sartet and bit-by-bit supplied him with details of the exhibition.

L'inspecteur de police Albert Gouvion est chargé de convoyer une importante collection de bijoux d'une valeur inestimable. Mais un dangereux et perfide truand, Marcel Lurat, dit « Quinquin » et ses complices font sauter le fourgon blindé au bazooka avant de s'emparer du butin. Quinquin va tuer, un à un, ses complices, y compris Gouvion, dont le meurtre est maquillé en accident ou en suicide. Le commissaire divisionnaire Louis Joss, supérieur et ami de Gouvion, ne croit pas à la thèse de l'accident et veut le venger. Il entreprend le ménage dans le milieu parisien en organisant la rencontre de deux bandes rivales (dont l'une est dirigée par Quinquin) à l'occasion d'un braquage avec l'aide de la maîtresse de Gouvion, Nathalie Villar, jeune et belle serveuse dans une boîte de nuit et sœur de Léon de Lyon, un des complices éliminés par Quinquin après le braquage. L'inspecteur comprend que son vieux pote, (qu'il surnomme affectueusement « Albert, la galoche », « l'empereur des cons ») avait ce don de s'attirer les ennuis, toujours de pire en pire selon lui, s'impliquant par faiblesse au milieu des gangsters pour impressionner et plaire à sa séduisante maîtresse.

The French gangster Abel Davos is on the run from the police. He has been tried in absentia and sentenced to death. He flees to Italy together with his wife Thérèse and their two children. He performs a successful holdup in Milano with his accomplice Raymond, but chased by the police the two decide to return to France. Entering France on a seemingly deserted beach, the small group is surprised by two customs officers and end up in a gunfight, where Thérèse and Raymond are killed. Left alone with the children, Abel calls his friends Riton and Fargier in Paris to come and pick him up in Nice. Unable to travel to Nice, they send a man named Éric Stark, who works as an ambulance driver. Éric lets Abel hide in his attic and the two men become friends.
