Lorie Brindel is a young marine surveyor who is attracted to older men, including one of her clients, Ed Bledsoe, a much older and twice-divorced man. After some flirting during her assessment of his yacht, they begin to date. While he is away on a business trip, Lorie moves in without asking. Although unhappy about it, he eventually relents and allows her to stay. As times passes, Lorie becomes more controlling of her romance with Ed, demanding that he be with her at all hours as well as have nobody else in his life. Lorie soon completely unravels from Ed's lack of commitment, and she cannot stand it when he chooses a golf tournament with some friends over her romantic weekend. Ed, never sure about their relationship in the first place, decides he's had enough and orders her to move out that day.

Sidney Deane and a group of streetballers in Venice, California are playing a pickup basketball game. When one of the players on the other team gets hurt, Sidney urges his opponents to pick Billy Hoyle, a white bystander, to take the injured man's place, figuring he cannot play well because of his race. Billy proves to be much better than Sidney expected, leading his team to beat Sidney's, and he then beats Sidney for money in a one-on-one rematch.

George, a former mental patient and pathological liar, is released from the hospital, and he is quickly, purposefully mistaken for millionaire brewery heir Abe Fielding by a troop of actors hired by the dubious and unscrupulous business manager Rupert. Rupert needs George to believe he is Fielding in order to kill him off and inherit the Fielding Brewery and family fortune. Eddie Dash, a con man who tenuously and forcefully befriends George due to a community service assignment attempts at first to capitalize on George's mistaken identity--but after being conned by Rupert into killing George for profit, turns the tables on Rupert and helps George fake his death, only to come back to the land of the living and inheriting both the brewery and the Fielding fortune instead. Along the way, Eddie and George turn two of Rupert's female associates into allies and partners--while getting themselves into plenty of contrived comical chaos and hilarity.

Young D.A. Louie Jeffries is hit by a car and dies in 1964, but manages to slip by the pearly gates and is instantly reborn. In 1947, cartoon characters are commonly referred to as "toons" and most work as paid actors in Hollywood. They frequently interact with humans and animals, and dwell in the animated district of Toontown, owned by businessman Marvin Acme. Amongst the toon stars is Roger Rabbit, who does comedy shorts with Baby Herman, but as of late his performances are poor. Meanwhile, R.K. Maroon, Roger’s employer and head of Maroon Studios, hires private detective Eddie Valiant to investigate rumors that Roger’s wife Jessica Rabbit is having an extramarital affair. Eddie himself is an alcoholic, following the murder of his brother Teddy at the hands of a toon. Going to the Ink & Paint Club, Eddie at first believes that Jessica is a rabbit (due to her last name), but surprised when he sees that she's a very attractive woman. He later attempts and manages to snap photographs of Marvin Acme playing patty cake with Jessica, showing them to Maroon and a distraught Roger who vows he and his wife will be happy, before running off.

United States Naval Aviator LT Pete "Maverick" Mitchell and his Radar Intercept Officer (RIO) LTJG Nick "Goose" Bradshaw fly the F-14A Tomcat aboard USS Enterprise (CVN-65). They, with Maverick's wingman "Cougar" and his RIO "Merlin", intercept Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-28s over the Indian Ocean. Cougar engages one of the hostile aircraft and afterwards is too shaken to land, despite being low on fuel. Maverick defies orders and assists Cougar despite also being low on fuel. Cougar gives up his Wings of Gold, citing his newborn child that he has never seen. Despite his dislike for Maverick's recklessness, CAG "Stinger" sends him and Goose—now his top crew—to attend the Top Gun school at NAS Miramar.

Launched in 1977, the Voyager 2 space probe carried a gold phonographic disk with a message of peace, inviting alien civilizations to visit Earth. The probe is intercepted by an alien ship which then sends a small scout vessel to establish first contact with Earth. However, instead of greeting the alien craft, the US government shoots it down. Crashing in Chequamegon Bay, Wisconsin, the lone alien occupant, looking like a floating ball of glowing energy, finds the home of recently widowed Jenny Hayden (Karen Allen). While there, the alien uses a lock of hair from her deceased husband, Scott, to clone a new body for himself as a terrified Jenny watches. The alien "Starman" (Jeff Bridges) has seven small silver spheres with him which provide energy to perform miraculous feats. He uses the first to send a message to his people stating that Earth is hostile and his spacecraft has been destroyed. He arranges to rendezvous with them in three days time. He then uses the second sphere to create a holographic map of the United States, coercing Jenny into taking him to the rendezvous point in Arizona.
