Robert Wright Campbell, né le 9 juin 1927 à Newark dans le New Jersey aux États-Unis et mort le 21 septembre 2000 à Monterey en Californie, est un écrivain et un scénariste américain, auteur de roman policier.
À sa démobilisation, son frère, le comédien William Campbell l'encourage à écrire et le présente au réalisateur Roger Corman pour lequel il écrira six scénarios. Ses scénarios sont signés R. Wright Campbell.
En 1975, il publie son premier roman, The Psy Who Sat and Waited. En 1987, il obtient un prix Edgar-Allan-Poe pour The Junkyard Dog, premier volume d’une série de onze romans consacrée à Jimmy Flannery, un agent électoral du Parti démocrate à Chicago. En 1986, il entame une série de quatre romans consacrés à Whistler, un détective privé de Los Angeles. Enfin, en 1988, il commence une nouvelle série qui ne compte que deux romans consacrés à Jake Hatch, un détective ferroviaire.
Son unique roman traduit en français Requins en eau trouble (Juice), publié en 1988, est, selon Claude Mesplède et Jean-Jacques Schleret, un « excellent roman noir (qui) contient quelques moments de folie : un chien qui mange des dollars beurrés ou le procureur surpris en galante compagnie, le bas-ventre couvert de crème chantilly ».

Après des études à l'institut Pratt à Brooklyn où il obtient en 1947 un diplôme d'illustrateur, il participe à la guerre de Corée.À sa démobilisation, son frère, le comédien William Campbell l'encourage à écrire et le présente au réalisateur Roger Corman pour lequel il écrira six scénarios. The film opens with a mid nineteenth century cargo liner sinking in a storm at sea, in what is presumed to be an Atlantic Gale. As the vessel begins to founder the crew muster the passengers to the lifeboats, one of which capsizes as it is launched, and its passengers are thrown out into the overwhelming seas. Swept below the waves and on the point of drowning, they are rescued by a group of divers who swim up to them to give them air and lead them to the submarine Nautilus.

The Angels first take note of "Poet" (Jack Nicholson) after one of them inadvertently damages his motorcycle and breaks its headlight. Poet, with far more guts than brains, challenges the Angel that hit his motorcycle. This is an act that would traditionally result in every Angel present participating in a group beating of the attacker. "When a non-Angel hits an Angel, all Angels retaliate." But the leader of the Angels, Buddy (Adam Roarke), intervenes and tells Poet that the Angels will replace the headlight. In the meantime, he's welcome to ride with them while they take care of business—which turns out to be going to a bar and beating up the members of another club who previously beat an Angel.

In 1943, British Intelligence in Cairo recruits criminal mastermind Roberto Rocca (Raf Vallone), demolitions expert and Irish Republican Army member Terence Scanlon (Mickey Rooney), forger Simon Fell (Edd Byrnes), cold-blooded murderer John Durrell (Henry Silva), and thief and impersonator Jean Saval (William Campbell) for a dangerous mission. The men are offered pardons in exchange for attempting to rescue an Italian general sympathetic to the Allies who is imprisoned in German-occupied Yugoslavia. The group is led by Major Richard Mace (Stewart Granger), who is trying to expiate his feelings of guilt for sending his own brother on a dangerous mission and waiting too long to extricate him. The fishing boat transporting Mace's team is stopped by a patrol boat, but they dispose of the Germans.
