Rodman E. "Rod" Serling (December 25, 1924 – June 28, 1975) was an American screenwriter, playwright, television producer, and narrator best known for his live television dramas of the 1950s and his science fiction anthology TV series, The Twilight Zone. Serling was active in politics, both on and off the screen, and helped form television industry standards. He was known as the "angry young man" of Hollywood, clashing with television executives and sponsors over a wide range of issues including censorship, racism, and war.

Christopher (Dempsey) is a very serious minded young man. Enrolling into college as a freshman he finds his roommate is someone named Alex. Alex (Slater), however, is not male but female and the two have been placed together by a computer error. Christopher finds the pairing intolerable and tries his best to find another place to live. The dorms are full and he is resigned, at least for the time being, to make the best of his current situation. Alex, a seemingly extroverted party girl, shows little interest in academics and treats Christopher as if he is simply an annoyance to be brushed aside whenever need be. As fate intervenes, the two slowly begin to realize that they do like one another after all which manifests itself into a sexual relationship wherein each finds a need filled by the other.

The story follows music composer/singer Winslow Leach, seen by satanic record producer Swan during his performance as a back-up to the 1950s-style nostalgia band The Juicy Fruits, which Swan produces. Swan believes Winslow's music perfect to open "The Paradise" – Swan's highly anticipated new concert hall – and has his right-hand man Arnold Philbin steal it. One month later Winslow goes to Swan's Death Records to inquire about his music but he is thrown out. He sneaks into Swan's private mansion, and observes several women rehearsing his music for an audition. One is Phoenix, an aspiring singer, whom Winslow deems perfect for his music and the two quickly fall for one another. Winslow realizes Swan's plan to open the Paradise with his music. Winslow sneaks in and Swan orders his minions to beat up Winslow and frame him for drug dealing.

The film presents three allegedly true stories of the supernatural. In the first tale, a witch places a lethal curse on the three young men who were inadvertently responsible for her son's death. In the second, a boy's dog disappears in the vicinity of a hole in the ground from which frightening sounds have been emanating; the boy's father agrees to be lowered into the hole to see if he can recover the dog, and to find out what's making the noise. The final story involves a strange, disoriented girl and the married couple who attempt to give her a ride home. According to the opening narration, the stories are based on research conducted by Dr. Jonathan Rankin, a parapsychologist, but this is evidently a fictional device as no record of the name "Jonathan Rankin" exists in parapsychological studies. The third tale, in fact, is simply a version of the Vanishing hitchhiker, a popular urban legend. The stories themselves are narrated by Rod Serling, but the opening and closing portions of the film feature a second, uncredited narrator.
