Drew Latham (Ben Affleck) is a wealthy advertising executive. Just before Christmas, he surprises his girlfriend Missy (Jennifer Morrison) with first class tickets to Fiji. She is horrified that he would want to spend Christmas away from his family. Citing the fact that Drew has never even introduced her to his family, she concludes that he will never get serious about their relationship and dumps him. Drew has his assistant send her a Cartier bracelet to apologize. Desperate not to spend Christmas alone, Drew calls all of his contacts to find a place to stay on Christmas, but he is not close enough to anyone to be invited.

Chili Palmer, a loan shark based in Miami, clashes with mobster, Ray "Bones" Barboni over a leather jacket borrowed from Palmer at a restaurant without permission by Mr. Barboni. They have two confrontations, the first of which leaves Barboni with a broken nose. Barboni then wants his boss Jimmy Capp to go after Palmer, but he refuses, as Palmer has done nothing wrong. Barboni took the jacket without permission, and Chili's car keys were in the jacket. Jimmy also tells Bones that Chili works for another mafioso named Momo and Capp has no power over him. But soon after Palmer's boss, Momo, dies of a heart attack, Chili finds himself working for Barboni, whose first order is for Palmer to collect a loan shark debt owed by dry cleaner Leo Devoe. Devoe was believed to have been killed in a commercial airliner crash, but in truth had actually gotten off the plane, and failed to re-board because he was getting drunk in the airport bar. After the plane crash, Devoe's wife identified his personal effects, and the airline quickly offers her an insurance check for $300,000. Faye carelessly gives Leo the insurance money, and he heads out of Miami. When Chili visits Leo's "widow" Faye, she reveals to Palmer that Leo is still alive, has left Miami, and is partying and winning money in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In 1976, Frank Pesce Jr. (Lapaglia) is a lucky man. His father, Frank Sr. (Aiello), is, however, very unlucky. One day, Frank Jr. buys a lottery ticket and finds that he has a good chance of winning. But Frank Sr. has some gambling debts to the mob and they are willing to take Frank Jr.'s ticket. Frank must decide what to do with the ticket. The plot is supposedly based on the true story of the first person to win the New York Lottery, but Frank Pesce Jr. never won the lottery.

Vincent "Vinnie" Antonelli (Steve Martin) is a former mobster recently inducted into the Witness Protection Program with his wife, Linda. The two are under the watchful eye of Barney Coopersmith (Rick Moranis). Vinnie and Barney soon find common ground when both of their wives leave them due to their lifestyles. The main character, Eddie Mazda (Benedict), is a hard nosed private investigator originally from Jersey City, New Jersey. After working a job for a widow named Nan Thompson (played by Amy Yasbeck), he soon after is confronted by mob boss Dom Gellatti (played by Ralph Drischell), the man who killed Mrs. Thompson's husband. Having already ransacked Mazda's film studio for any incriminating pictures against him for fear of federal prosecutions, Gellatti gives Eddie the chance to back down by forcing him to leave Jersey City and never come back... or else. After gathering some of his possessions, calls and leaves a phone message to his ex-wife Vicky, and leaving his pet goldfish with the next-door neighbor and her cat, Mazda is escorted by two of Gellatti's goons to the airport and given a plane ticket to Chicago and some money; instead, he decides to go to Hawaii, taking with him film negatives that he managed to hide from the mobsters.

Marian is an up-and-coming fashion designer in New York. One morning, while on her way to work, Marian is mugged. She calls the police and they manage to catch the thief. While waiting at the police station, a handsome Italian attorney named Edward Moran offers to take her home in his limousine. They eventually fall in love and get married. During the wedding celebration, Edward offers to set up in business Marian and her friend Silvia. On their honeymoon, Edward gets gets called away in on business. While he is away, Marian becomes suspicious after several incidents, leading to being dragged off to the family compound for protection. Marian's sister-in-law Gina tells her that the family is part of the Italian Mafia. This is followed by an improbable gun battle between mafia factions, including men in a helicopter shooting up the family compound, killing Gina's husband. Later, Sylvia tells Marian and Edward of her discovery that the business she has with Marian is a front for importing cocaine. As Marian tells Silvia that she has decided leave Edward, Silvia is pushed in front of a car (murdered by the family). Marian goes to the police offering to testify against the family. Despite police protection, the family kidnaps her, and takes her back to Edward. After some soapy dialogue between them, Edward shoots and kills Marian for "breaking the rules".
