Jimmy Winterpock always gets teased by the football team for being overweight at 188 pounds and only 5 ft 5. As a school assignment he writes about it in his journal. He soon meets a girl named Sable Moore who, as the story goes on, Jimmy learns that she cuts herself. After making quick friends, they start to go to church together. Eventually, Jimmy begins jogging with his father, with a goal to lose 38 pounds. Paul Grove, Jimmy's friend wants to catch a killer so he posts a Photoshopped picture of Jimmy's sister as bait, because of this, Jimmy feels guilty. Paul talks Jimmy into sneaking out to a party. Later Paul's father commits suicide. Paul runs away and gets injured in an accident in Colorado. Jimmy tutors Robb Thurman, who is the football captain. Robb, because of this, tells his teammates not to harass Jimmy any more, as they become friends.

Young Allen Anderson (Allelon Ruggerio), a struggling scriptwriter is under pressure from his girlfriend Mary Jane (Christi Taylor), due to his mediocre lifestyle and her big dream of earning his huge inheritance (which implies why she is dating him). Jonathan "Mox" Moxon (James Van Der Beek) is an intelligent and academically gifted backup quarterback for the West Canaan High School football team. Despite his relative popularity at school, easy friendships with other players, and smart and sassy girlfriend Jules Harbor (Amy Smart), Mox is dissatisfied with his life. He wants to leave Texas to go to school at Brown University. He is constantly at odds with his football-obsessed father (Thomas F. Duffy) and dreads playing it under legendary coach Bud Kilmer (Jon Voight), a verbally abusive, controlling authority who believes in winning "at all costs". He has a strong track record as coach, remarking in a speech that "in my thirty years of coaching at West Canaan, I have brought two state titles, and 22 district championships!" His philosophy finally takes its toll on Coyotes' quarterback, Lance Harbor (Paul Walker), Mox's best friend and Jules' brother. Lance is manipulated into taking anesthetic shots into an injured knee that finally succumbs to failure and results in even greater injury during gameplay. He is rushed to the hospital, where doctors are appalled at the massive amount of scar tissue found under his knee.

On the first day of summer, dim-witted but kind-hearted Ed has a nightmare about talking hamburgers. Troubled by it, he shows up late to work at Good Burger. On the same morning, Dexter, a high school student, steals his mother's car after she leaves for a business trip. He accidentally crashes into his teacher Mr. Wheat's car. With no driver's license or insurance, Dexter is liable to go to jail. Wheat agrees that he will not call the police if Dexter pays $1,900 to cover the damage. In need of money, Dexter gets a job at Mondo Burger, but after a clash with the strict manager, Kurt Bozwell, he is fired. Dexter then finds work at Good Burger, where he meets and reluctantly befriends Ed and a slew of colorful employees.
