Roshanlal Nagrath (14 July 1917 – 16 November 1967), better known simply by his first name Roshan, was a Bollywood film music composer. He was the father of the actor and film director Rakesh Roshan and music director Rajesh Roshan and paternal grandfather of Hritik Roshan.

The film depicts the life of one-time wealthy and noble poet Mirza Ghalib. The story revolves around his trials, successes and failures and his ultimate descent into poverty. Ghalib falls in love with a beautiful courtesan named Chaudvin; however, tragedy befalls their ill-fated relationship. Set in a historical background, the film deals with the eternal psychological and social problems in the career of a genius poet. This film portrays one aspect of life of Mirza Ghalib (born 27 December 1797; died 15 February 1869, at age 73) in which the conflict between love and loyalty had deeply affected a sensitive artist. Mirza Ghalib fails to make an impression at the Royal Court 'Mushaira' of Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar but at the same time, unknowingly wins the heart of Chaudvin, an accomplished court dancer.

The film is set in Lucknow, where widower, Nawab Mirza Sultan lives with daughter Zeenat Jahan in an old mansion. She falls in love with Nawab Yusuf (Pradeep Kumar), but in a twist of fate, her uncle connivingly fixes her marriage with Nawab Sikandar Mirza (Ashok Kumar), though she assumes it is with Yusuf. When she finds the truth, it is the day of marriage, thus she visits a nearby dargah (Sufi shrine), hoping to meet Yusuf, not knowing that he is out of town. Thus, he never arrives and Zeenat faints. Shankar & Bhawariya are childhood lovers who have been parted by unfortunate circumstances. Shankar's cousin Suresh (Deven Verma) is an advocate. Matchmaker Ram comes up with marriage proposals for both the cousins. Following family traditions, it is decided that the boys will meet the respective brides by proxy. Suresh falls in love with Madhumati (Bhawariya). He cooks up a wicked plot. He writes two letters to each of the families. Shankar comes to know that Madhumati is Bhawariya, the girl whom he used to love. In a rift between Shankar & Suresh, Suresh dies accidentally for which Shankar is held the culprit. Madumati who is determined to see her husband's murderer hanged, changes her words & saves Shankar.
