Ryōko Hirosue (広末 涼子, Hirosue Ryōko, born July 18, 1980) is a Japanese actress and singer, best known in the West for her roles in the Luc Besson-produced Wasabi and the Academy Award-winning Japanese film Departures. She also starred in the 2008 comedy series Yasuko to Kenji.

Biography

On October 9, 2010 she married Jun Izutsu, a candle artist. They met in Haiti in March 2010 participating in earthquake relief efforts. She has two children. Her cousin is a former member of the House of Representatives in Japan.

Durant toute son enfance, Tamako Tomita (Yui Aragaki) a reçu de strictes leçons de ping-pong par sa mère. À l'époque, elle était reconnue comme une prodige du tennis de table. Après la mort de sa mère, elle a cependant retrouvé une vie ordinaire. Aujourd'hui, à 28 ans, elle travaille dans une entreprise et son petit-ami Akihiko Ejima (Kōji Seto) est membre du club de ping-pong de l'entreprise, mais il la quitte pour une nouvelle employée et membre du club Airi Ogasawara (Mei Nagano). Dévastée, Tamako retourne dans sa ville natale. Elle y retrouve le club de ping-pong autrefois géré par sa mère et aujourd'hui dans un état lamentable. Elle rencontre également Hisashi Hagiwara (Eita), un nouveau membre qui a été quitté par sa femme et sa fille. Pour se venger de son ex-petit ami et aider à faire revivre le club de sa mère, Tamako décide de participer à un tournoi de tennis de table en double mixte et fait équipe avec Hisashi Hagiwara.

As a child, Ishikawa Goemon's (Yōsuke Eguchi) entire family was assassinated for political reasons. His mother (Ryo) sent Goemon away for safety minutes before he witnessed her death. Running away with his caretaker, they were attacked by bandits but he was saved by the great Nobunaga Oda (Hashinosuké Nakamura). Sachi is the long-suffering wife of popular novelist Otani in post-World War II Japan. Brilliant but self-destructive, Otani spends his days drinking, running up debts, and looking for inspiration with other women. A visit from Miyo and Kichizo, the owners of the tavern which Otani frequents, informs Sachi that her husband has run up a fortune in debts and has stolen money from them. To pay off the debt, Sachi becomes a waitress at the bar, where her beauty and warmth bring in new customers. While working at the bar, she meets a young laborer, Okada, who falls in love with her. Daigo Kobayashi (Masahiro Motoki) loses his job as a cellist when his orchestra is disbanded. He and his wife Mika (Ryōko Hirosue) move from Tokyo to his hometown in Yamagata, where they live in his childhood home that was left to him when his mother died two years earlier. When inventor Mariko Tanaka (Hiroko Yakushimaru), who works for Hitachi appliances, accidentally re-engineers a washing machine for time travel, the Japanese government then convinces her to go back in time to prevent the passage of a fictitious law that would prevent the usage of real estate as collateral for loans, which was a major cause of the bursting of the Japanese asset price bubble. However, when contact is lost after she goes back in time, the government then sends Isao Shimokawaji (Hiroshi Abe), who works for the Finance Ministry's Emergency Response Bureau to convince Mariko's estranged daughter Mayumi (Ryoko Hirosue), to go back in time to investigate (other ministry officials tried to use the time machine but all they ended up with were faded socks).
