The opening scene is inspired by "The Kiss", a short story by Spanish post-romanticist writer Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer and by Francisco Goya's painting The Third of May 1808. Toledo, 1808. The city has been occupied by French Napoleonic troops. A firing squad executes a small group of Spanish rebels who cry out "Long live chains!" or "Death to the gabachos!" -a Spanish pejorative term for "Frenchmen"-. The troops are encamped in a Catholic church which they desecrate by drinking, singing, and eating the communion wafers. The captain caresses a statue of Doña Elvira de Castañeda and is knocked unconscious by the statue of her husband, Don Pedro López de Ayala. In revenge, the captain exhumes Doña Elvira's body to find her face has not decomposed; there is a suggestion of intended necrophilia.

The film consists of several thematically linked scenes: five gatherings of a group of bourgeois friends, and the four dreams of different characters. Vieil homme invalide prisonnier dans un fauteuil roulant, le docteur Zimmer a consacré toute sa vie à la science. Éminent spécialiste en neurologie, il a étudié durant de longues années les centre nerveux moteurs, reprenant les recherches de son prédécesseur : le docteur Orloff. Selon ce dernier, l'origine du Bien et du Mal était purement physiologique, une théorie que Zimmer a mis en pratique, en découvrant la localisation de ces centres nerveux, et de ce fait il est parvenu à contrôler les cellules conditionnant le Bien ou le Mal chez un individu. Ses expériences, critiquées par ses confrères, en laboratoire sur des animaux se sont avérées concluantes, parvenant à transformer un être vivant en sujet docile en sujet agressif ou l'inverse. Mais Zimmer, soutenu par sa fille Irma et son assistante dévouée Barbara, souhaite poursuivre et valider ses théories sur un cerveau humain.
