À Paris en 1880, le sculpteur Auguste Rodin, 40 ans, reçoit la reconnaissance de l'État français qui lui commande l’œuvre La Porte de l'Enfer, composée entre autres du Baiser et du Penseur. A French couple, Pierre and Geraldine want kids, but Geraldine is unable to conceive. After eleven years of infertility and a two year vetting and administrative process they travel to Cambodia to adopt an orphan. They want to adopt before Christmas. When the couple reaches Cambodia, they book a hotel that has other French people that are also waiting to adopt. Their tempers flare when they have to deal with corruption, frequent rain, mosquitoes, many documents, and the uncertainty of whether or not they will be successful and if they are, what they will do if the baby has any serious diseases.

Irène is an actress who performs her one-person show all over Northern France. One day she is heading for a new town when her car breaks down. On the countryside she is picked up by a travelling stranger who rides a scooter. He introduces himself as Dries and gives her a lift. She rewards him with a ticket for her show. Superintendent Pharaon De Winter (Emmanuel Schotte) investigates the murder of a girl aged 11, who had also been raped. The film starts with her body being examined by De Winter in a remote rural field next to a railway line. The film then focuses on De Winter's struggle to deal with the realities of the world. In the weekend that follows, he spends time at a restaurant and at the seaside with his neighbours, Domino (Severine Caneele) and Joseph (Philippe Tullier), both of whom are in a relationship. Joseph is a crude man, as revealed from his disturbing carnal desires, seen from his actions and his use of language, in contrast to Domino, whom De Winter considers as tender and to whom he is attracted.
