At the start we see "David" Jean-Louis Trintignant as a prisoner in some sort of torture chamber, a row of cells whose occupants, in straitjackets, are chained to their beds. David manages to escape from custody. On the run, he arrives at the home of a couple living in an isolated farmhouse (Marlène Jobert and Philippe Noiret). He claims that he is in possession of an important secret, one that he came across by chance, that is so terrible that the authorities will do anything to protect it. He predicts, correctly, that the state will soon mobilize all its resources to find him, using as a cover story the claim that a paranoid killer is on the loose from an asylum. The couple are unsure whether to believe him, but give him some assistance. Whether David is an unlucky but innocent fugitive or is the psychopath described by the police and press remains a mystery until the last moment of the film.

Député du Parti Républicain Unifié (P.R.U.), Julien Dandieu est susceptible de prendre part au gouvernement qui se met en place. At the Institute for Cybernetics and Future Science ("Institut für Kybernetik und Zukunftsforschung, IKZ"), a new supercomputer hosts a simulation program that includes an artificial world with over 9,000 "identity units" who live as human beings, unaware that their world is just a simulacron. Professor Vollmer (Adrian Hoven), who is technical director of the program, is apparently on the verge of an incredible secret discovery. He becomes increasingly agitated and anti-social before dying in a mysterious accident. His successor, Dr. Fred Stiller, has a discussion with Günther Lause, the security adviser of the institute, when the latter suddenly disappears without trace, before passing on Vollmer's secret to Stiller. More mysterious still is the fact that none of the other IKZ employees seem to have any memory of Lause.

Raoul Maury, un inspecteur de police mis à l’écart par sa hiérarchie pour avoir voulu jadis continuer une enquête dérangeante à l'égard de certains politiciens influents, a sombré dans l’alcoolisme. Isabelle, son épouse désabusée, tente en vain de le ramener à la raison. Ses collègues qui surveillent l’ex-sergent Donetti appartenant au gang du commandant Capra, un gang composé d’anciens mercenaires tombés dans l’illégalité, aperçoivent ce suspect qui aborde justement Maury. En réalité, Donetti a cru reconnaître en Maury le lieutenant Kieffer, leur ancien compagnon d’armes, et Maury, homme désormais déchu et isolé, serait donc un renfort inespéré pour Capra dont l’équipe vient d’être décimée par les forces de l’ordre. Les chefs de Maury, de leur côté, y voient l’occasion d’infiltrer ce gang par son intermédiaire. De plus, Maury aurait ainsi la chance de reprendre du galon. Le plan est d’éliminer proprement Capra avant qu’il ne parle car il est détenteur de secrets politiques trop compromettants pour le pouvoir en place. Cependant, Capra qui ne connaît pas directement Kieffer qu’il sait normalement réfugié au Venezuela, est d’abord déterminé à éprouver cette dernière recrue.

Two young women travel by car through the Auvergne. Having run out of gas near an odd village, they spend the night in a barn where they make love. The next morning, Anna is gone and a dwarf in medieval garb guides Françoise through a forest (later identified as Brocéliande) to a lake, where a magic canoe carries her to an island, and then to a castle where scantily clad women frolic and kiss, overseen by the dwarf Gurth. Françoise is interviewed by Morgan le Fay and bathed by some of her women. Gurth reveals in a monologue that he procures the women for Morgan and has aspirations to take over.

Four sisters living in an old château are convinced that they are vampires. One believes she was raped by the villagers years before, and is blind. Another is afraid of sunlight. They all react violently to crucifixes. The sisters are being manipulated by a sinister old man who alternates between admonishing them to kill newcomers that threaten their exposure, and groping their breasts. The four seem to worship a bestial idol in the forest who speaks to them with a disembodied voice.
