The movie revolves around Toby, a middle-aged ex-dancer now working as a ballet instructor at Juilliard. He is asked for an interview by husband and wife Mike and Lisa, who claim they are preparing a dissertation on the dance community of the 1960s. Through the course of the interview, Mike's questions keep getting more and more personal, until it is revealed that Mike suspects Toby of being his biological father, as indicated by Mike's mother on her deathbed. When Toby denies this, Mike forcefully takes a DNA sample from Toby and rushes to the police lab where his friend Jim performs a DNA test.

Mike Flux (Steve Zahn) works at his parents' motel as the night manager. One day he sees Sue (Jennifer Aniston), who is staying at the motel for the weekend. He develops a crush on her and surprises her at her door with a bottle of wine. She doesn't quite know what to make of his approach, shares some wine to be polite, then asks him to leave.
