The film is about a young girl named Katherine and her older friend Hester who live on an isolated farm run by Hester and her father Francis. Katherine works as a maid and wants to leave because there's too much work. Hester, however, becomes attracted to Katherine and holds her there, promising to give her less work in the future. When Francis dies, Hester decides to sell the farm for cash. They move to small cottage on the edge of the farm and plan to go to Europe. But a tragic accident and the theft of their money change their plans.

The story follows two fictional characters Mick and Kev who have nothing to offer. They are stereotypical bogans with a taste for cheap thrills. Kev's hobby is being angry, his motto is "Maximum fear, minimum time". He is unemployed with "attitude," an antagonistic manner. En mars 1994, c'est la semaine de la mode de Paris, avec le grand et le petit mondes qui gravitent autour. Tandis que la reporter Kitty Potter enchaîne les interview des stars de la mode, Olivier de la Fontaine, le président du syndicat du prêt-à-porter se retrouve dans une voiture de maître avec Sergio, un étrange personnage qui porte la même cravate que lui. Olivier meurt brusquement alors que la voiture est prise dans un embouteillage sur le pont Alexandre-III. Sergio s'enfuit en plongeant dans la Seine. Ni Isabelle, la veuve d'Olivier, ni Simone Lowenthal, dite Simone Lo, ne semblent regretter la mort d'Olivier sur laquelle enquêtent les inspecteurs Tantpis et Forget. Joe Flynn, reporter sportif qui allait quitter son hôtel, est prié par son journal d’enquêter sur ce mystérieux décès, mais au moment où il veut reprendre sa chambre, celle-ci vient d'être attribuée à l’énigmatique Anne Eisenhower qui a perdu ses bagages à Roissy.
