Swarna Mallawarachchi the award-winning Sri Lankan film actress, also known as the "Golden star of Sinhalese cinema". She began her acting career whilst still a schoolgirl - starring in the 1966 released Sinhalese film Sath Samudura directed by Dr Siri Gunasinghe. During a career that spans over 40 years, Swarna has won the 'Best Actress Award' 26 times.

Biography

Swarna left Sri Lankan cinema for a brief period in the 1970s to live abroad. When she returned after a four-year absence there was an influx of new actresses. Swarna accepted supporting roles from directors during this period however obtained the Best Actress awards for these roles during these years. A hint at the excellence of her talent. Swarna Mallawarachchi holds the highest number of 'Best Actress' awards in Sri Lanka.

In her off-screen life, Swarna is an example of the roles she portrays on-screen. A strong, independent woman who has achieved the best in life for herself and her family. She was appointed the UNHCR ambassador for women's rights in Sri Lanka since 2004.

Swarna's truly unique role as an actress is evident in films such as Vasantha Obeysekera's Dadayama (The Hunt) and Kadapathaka Chayava (Reflections in the Mirror), Dharmasiri Bandaranayake's Suddhilage Kathawa (The Story of Suddhi) and Bava Duka / Bava Karma, Sumitra Peries' Sagara Jalaya (Letter Written in the Sand) and Prasanna Vithanage's Anantha Rathriya (Dark Night of the Soul).

Saravanan (Rajinikanth), a psychiatrist, visits India on vacation. He meets up with his foster brother Senthilnathan, alias Senthil (Prabhu), and his wife Ganga (Jyothika). Senthil's mother Kasthuri (K. R. Vijaya) wanted Senthil to marry Priya (Malavika), the daughter of his father's cousin Kandaswamy (Nassar), to reunite the two branches of the family after 30 years of separation because Senthil's father (Sivaji Ganesan) chose to marry Kasthuri instead of Kandaswamy's sister, Akhilandeshwari (Sheela). Saravanan learns that Senthil had bought the Vettaiyapuram mansion, despite attempts by the local village elders to dissuade them, and moves in with them. Akhilandeshwari is jealous of Saravanan and plots to kill him with the help of her assistant Oomaiyan (Sonu Sood).

Sridhar (Tarun) is a final year degree student and gets selected in the campus selections for studies abroad. He goes to Mumbai for an interview and in his return finds Preeti (Trisha) and loses his heart to her. Sridhar comes to know that Preeti was about to join in degree and Preeti learns that he was a final year degree student. Sridhar is an ardent cricket fan, so is Preeti, while Sridhar is also a good football player. The principal of the college appoints a coach called Reshma (Shriya), who is also a student, for the football team led by Sridhar. Sridhar tries his best to trace Preeti by visiting several women's colleges, while Preeti also watches for Sridhar at the men's college. Accidentally, Preeti helps Sridhar's mother, when she had a heart attack. In order to find Preeti at any cost, Sridhar goes to the LB Stadium, where a cricket match is in progress and gets injuries in a bomb blast in the stadium. Just before the blast, both Preeti and Sridhar find each other but could not meet due to the blast.
