Umberto Spadaro (8 November 1904 – 12 October 1981) was an Italian film actor.

He appeared in around 95 films between 1940 and 1979. His brother Peppino Spadaro was also an actor.

Salvatore Cannavone (Domenico Modugno) is a Sicilian cobbler-cum-shoe salesman who has worked for thirty years in New York City. He returns to his hometown where, although of modest means in America, he is considered a wealthy man and becomes the centre of attraction. He begins to live with his brother Raffaele (Pippo Franco), his wife Rosa (Luciana Paluzzi), and his stepdaughter Mariuccia (Eleonora Giorgi) and, starting from their first meet, he and Mariuccia get busy with games of seduction. Raffaelle notices Salvatore's interest in Mariuccia and attempts to make use of it to have him stay at their house and to exploit his wealth. On the other hand, Salvatore also has an eye on voluptuous Rosa and both Mariuccia and Rosa begin to see Salvatore's passion as a means to secure the economic benefits he provides, which eventually leads to a peculiar ménage à trois. Things get even more complicated when Mariuccia is betrothed to another man.

A stranger arrives at the little Mexican border town of San Miguel. In Sicily at the end of the 1800s, the rich Zia Croce has a rich farm which controls together with his cousin Zio Simone, married to the young Mita, which fails to give him a son, who in the future Zio Simone will inherit all the fruits and vegetables that produces the farm. On stage comes the young Liolà which is surprised to see Mita married to Zio Simone, because previously he had an affair with her. Tuzza, daughter of Zia Croce, discovers that Liolà intends to renew a relationship with Mita and so she seduces him, making herself pregnant. When the incident is discovered a commotion's going on and so Liolà, combining other trouble, gets pregnant Mita also, resumed after a relaizone love. Finally Zio Simone believes that his wife had given birth to a child who would donate their possessions in future; but the reality is suddenly discovered.

Loosely based on actual events during World War II, the film depicts real life German Captain Bernhard Rogge commanding the navy raider Atlantis, which from May 1940 to November 1941 sank 22 Allied merchant ships. The story alternates between scenes at the Admiralty and scenes at sea, particularly showing Captain Rogge's humanity and chivalrous conduct of his military engagements. Rogge was one of the few German flag rank officers who was not arrested by the Allies after the war, due to his conduct as a military officer. After eighteen months of successful raids, Atlantis was sunk on 22 November 1941 by the British cruiser Devonshire.
