Lafayette (Gérard Depardieu) est un jeune électricien qui vit à New York, mais il n’en fréquente que trois repères : le Musée de Cire de la Rome Antique, de Flaxman (James Coco) où il travaille, un petit théâtre géré par des féministes, son appartement en sous-sol infesté de rats. Un matin, il remarque dans la rue des individus vêtus de combinaisons blanches, il prend peur alors que ce ne sont que des dératisateurs. Au théâtre, les femmes préparent un spectacle dans lequel il est question du viol d’un homme. Lafayette, mal à l’aise durant ces répétitions, provoque quelque peu les comédiennes qui décident de le violer réellement. Cet acte de violence est accompli par Angélica (Gail Lawrence) qui par ailleurs est amoureuse de lui.

Le film retrace les tribulations de Marcella Valmarin (Agostina Belli), pendant le Fascisme, son écroulement, puis pendant l'après-guerre. Adelaide (Monica Vitti) is a florist who begins to date Oreste (Marcello Mastroianni), who is an already married construction worker. Grâce à une permission militaire deux soldats américains Dick e Tom quittent le front de guerre et se rendent en vacances à Rome pour une semaine. Pendant le voyage ils font la connaissance de Maria une institutrice italienne qui se rend aussi à Rome afin d'obtenir de l'aide auprès de la curie romaine pour son village sinistré par la guerre. Une fois arrivés, chacun poursuit son chemin, mais Dick qui s'est entiché de la jeune fille la retrouve. Ensembles ils visitent le Vatican et participent à diverses festivités. Malheureusement le couple doit se séparer car chacun doit reprendre son activité mais avant de repartir sur le front, Dick promet à Maria que quand tout sera terminé il la rejoindra.
