Vera Frances (born 1930) is a British actress who worked with Arthur Askey, Tommy Handley, George Formby, Dinah Sheridan, John Mills and Alastair Sim, among others.

Frances's father was a props and special effects man for Gainsborough Pictures at Grove Studio's in Shepherds Bush, she made her first film appearance inBack-Room Boy as the Cockney girl Jane. she then went on to make another five films.

In her early teens Frances left the movies to follow her ambition to be a dance teacher. This proved to be very successful and resulted in a dance school. After marrying Dennis William Ward in 1953 Frances moved the school to March in Cambridgeshire. Dennis Ward died in Cambridge aged 73 in 2000; Vera Frances still lives in Cambridgeshire.

This comedy explores the wayward rivalry between mechanic and Home Guard lance corporal George Singleton (George Formby) and an adversary also in the Home Guard (Ronald Shiner). When the rival Home Guard units of Major Wallop and Minor Wallop are sent on battle manoeuvres, George Singleton (Formby) launches his own unique style of commando raid against neighbouring Major Wallop to steal a Vickers machine gun. The raid fails and Singleton loses his lance corporal's stripe, so he and a little evacuee girl named Irene (Vera Frances) decide to fall back on 'Plan B' - to build their very own tank. The venture is such a success that George is made a sergeant.

Arthur Askey plays meteorologist Arthur Pilbeam who is jilted by his fiancée Betty because he has to speed back to the BBC every hour, on the hour due to his internationally vital job of creating the BBC pips. As he cannot be fired during wartime and wanting to avoid all women, he is assigned the solitary job of sending weather reports from a remote Scottish lighthouse. Before taking a boat from the mainland during the four hours of daylight that are available for the time of year, the locals warn him he will go mad from isolation and the curse of a mermaid within a month as others have.
