Biography
W. Howard Greene est reconnu comme un pionnier du cinéma dans le domaine de la photographie en couleur, selon le procédé Technicolor. Il débute en 1932 comme premier assistant opérateur, puis est cadreur sur Becky Sharp en 1935. À partir de cette année-là et jusqu'en 1956 (année de sa mort), comme chef opérateur, il contribue à une quarantaine de films américains (dont bon nombre en couleur, mais pas exclusivement), aux côtés des réalisateurs Michael Curtiz (ex. : La Vie privée d'Élisabeth d'Angleterre en 1939, avec Bette Davis et Errol Flynn), Arthur Lubin (ex. : Le Fantôme de l'Opéra en 1943, avec Claude Rains), ou encore William A. The film opens in Virginia in 1865, shortly after General Lee's surrender at Battle of Appomattox Court House. A war correspondent Jim Steed exchanges comments with Count Von Bohlen, an arrogant Prussian army officer serving as a military attaché during the American Civil War. A year later Steed is in Vienna shortly before the outbreak of the Austro-Prussian War of 1866. There he encounters a famous dancer, Anna Marie, who he persuades to spy for him on Von Bohlen, now a member of the Prussian General staff, who has become infatuated with her. However the secret plans which they manage to pass on to the Austrians are unable to prevent the decisive Prussian victory.
