During the final days of the Korean War, Hawkeye Pierce has suffered a nervous breakdown and is being treated by Dr. Sidney Freedman in a mental hospital. The breakdown was triggered by a series of repressed memories stemming from the aftermath of an outing most of the 4077th staff had at a beach near Incheon. Sidney is trying to get Hawkeye to release the repressed memories, which are causing Hawkeye to remember things incorrectly. The first memory Hawkeye is repressing involves the trip home on one of the 4077th buses. Initially the scene is jaunty, with a drunk Hawkeye calling for a bottle of whiskey to be passed to someone who "can't wait" to drink it. Eventually, Sidney draws the memory out of Hawkeye slowly. First he discovers that the person in question was a soldier who needed the bottle. Then, it is revealed that the bottle was not containing whiskey but plasma and the soldier was severely wounded. Hawkeye was attending to the soldier and was frustrated that his fellow staff members were not responding quickly enough to the injured soldier, hence why he said "this guy can't wait".

Abby McClure (Doris Day) is a widow with three sons who runs the lumberyard her husband owned. Her matchmaking sister Maxine (Pat Carroll) tricks her into calling widower Jake Iverson (Brian Keith) and inviting him to the business dinner party Abby is having later that night. Not interested in the trouble his sexy, adultery-minded neighbor Cleo (Elaine Devry) is trying to get him into, Jake arrives at Abby’s, only to be bored by all of the matchmaking dialogue. Jake makes up an excuse to leave, but later runs into Abby at an all-night supermarket. Embarrassed by being caught in a fib, Jake meets Abby at a local drive-in run by the wise-cracking Herbie (George Carlin) and the two stay out until 2am. A romance develops, much to the chagrin of Jake’s teenage daughter, Stacey (Barbara Hershey); and Abby’s three sons, Flip, Mitch and Jason (John Findlater, Jimmy Bracken, and Richard Steele). The children make certain that neither Jake nor Abby can be comfortable at the other’s home, so the pair wind up more than once at the drive-in, before finally falling in love. Getting fed up with the situation, they elope, not telling their children that they have married until the next day after being discovered in bed together.

The film opens on a cold winter's night at a foundling home. A young boy walks out to take in milk bottles, when he sees a baby in a basket on the ground. The baby's name is Pauline, and the boy (whose name is later revealed to be George) promises to protect her no matter what. Soon, it is time for Pauline to get adopted. George tries numerous attempts to prevent that from happening as she gets older. His last stunt however makes Pauline suitable for her new parents. Mrs. Carruthers, the owner of the foundling home (played by Doris Packer), and George (now played by Pat Boone) transport Pauline to her new home. Her new parents tell their son to get Pauline's bags. At the same time, Pauline remembers her toothbrush and goes back to the car to retrieve it. George seizes the opportunity to prevent Pauline from living with her new family, and pulls the hand brake on the car. It races away, and everyone begins to chase after it. The opening credits are displayed as the car careens down the street and into a poultry farm. All seems well until the car reaches a train crossing. Pauline and her brother to be aren't hurt, but her parents to be do not want her anymore. Mrs. Carruthers finds out that George pulled the hand brake, and sends him packing. Later that night as George is about to leave, Pauline wants to come with him. He objects, and says that when he makes his fortune, he will come back for her. Pauline promises to wait.

CBS cameraman Harry Hinkle (Jack Lemmon) gets injured when football player Luther "Boom Boom" Jackson (Ron Rich) runs into him while he is covering a Browns game at Cleveland Stadium. Harry's injuries are minor, but his conniving lawyer brother-in-law William H. "Whiplash Willie" Gingrich (Walter Matthau) convinces him to pretend that his leg and hand have been partially paralyzed. This way, they can receive a huge indemnity from the insurance company. Harry reluctantly goes along with the scheme because he is still in love with his ex-wife, Sandy (Judi West), and it might win her back. The insurance company suspects that the paralysis is a fake one, so a cat-and-mouse game starts between its investigator, Chester Purkey (Cliff Osmond), and the shyster Willie. Boom Boom takes very good care of Harry, who starts having second thoughts as he witnesses guilt taking its toll on Boom Boom. As he also sees that Sandy is back by his side strictly out of greed, Harry decides to reveal the truth, thereby ruining Willie's get-rich plans.
