Gorky Film Studio (Russian: Киностудия имени Горького) is a film studio in Moscow, Russian Federation. By the end of the Soviet Union, Gorky Film Studio had produced more than 1,000 films. Many film classics were filmed at the Gorky Film Studio throughout its history and some of these were granted international awards at various film festivals.

The film has no narrative structure and rather than telling a story uses vignettes to show the conditions in which Soviet army recruits lived. The film is often homoerotic, the soldiers are shown to have very little privacy and are forced into such intimate acts as washing each other.

During the Russian Civil War (1918–1922), a female commissar of the Red Army cavalry Klavdia Vavilova (Nonna Mordyukova) finds herself pregnant. Until her child is born, she is forced to stay with the family of a poor Jewish blacksmith Yefim Magazannik (Rolan Bykov), his wife, mother-in-law, and six children. At first, both the Magazannik family and "Madame Vavilova", as they call her, are not enthusiastic about living under one roof, but soon they share their rationed food, make her civilian clothes, and help her with the delivery of her newborn son. Vavilova seemingly embraces motherhood, civilian life, and new friends.

L'histoire se déroule au printemps 1940. La vie des élèves de la classe de 9e "B" se déroule comme d'habitude. Au centre des événements se trouve Iskra Poliakova, délégué de classe et membre du Komsomol dévouée, dont la mère appelée camarade Poliakova est une communiste qui s'est distinguée lors de la Guerre civile russe. Les idéaux de la jeune Iskra sont limpides et comme elle le croit inébranlables, sa pensée est binaire tout comme celle de sa mère. Elle s'indigne sincèrement, par exemple, quand sa camarade de classe Zina lui pose les questions sur la féminité. Invitée à un anniversaire Iskra admire un poème récité par son amie Vika, fille du célèbre ingénieur aéronautique Leonid Liouberetski, mais fait volte-face apprenant qu'il est écrit par Sergueï Essénine, l'auteur désigné comme décadent par la critique soviétique. Imperturbable Vika lui demande si elle a déjà lu Essénine et lui prête le livre.

Events depicted in the movie unfold in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The Americans are bombing Vietnamese towns and villages, breaking into households, killing women and children. All ships of the European merchant fleet have already left the coast of North Vietnam, but the Soviet dry cargo ship Chelyabinsk refuses to leave Vietnamese shores despite a United States military ultimatum.
