Valery Petrovich Todorovsky (Russian: Вале́рий Петро́вич Тодоро́вский; Ukrainian: Валерій Петрович Тодоровський; born 9 May 1962, Odessa) is a Russian film director, screenwriter, TV producer of Jewish origin.
Legend has it that Todorovsky was born immediately after his mother watched Hitchcock's Psycho, in 1962. The film did not have an official release in Odessa; rather, it somehow reached Odessa Film Studio, where his father, Piotr Todorovsky, also a film director, was working at the time.
Among the films he directed is the crime melodrama set in Moscow, The Country of Deaf (Strana Glukhikh), scripted by actress-director-scriptwriter Renata Litvinova based on her own novella To Have and to Belong, and Hipsters. The Country of Deaf was entered into the 48th Berlin International Film Festival.
Of his earlier films, The Hearse (Katafalk) won the Grand Prix at Mannheim (1990) and Love (Lyubov) received Ecumenical Prize at Cannes (1992). In 1999 he was a member of the jury at the 21st Moscow International Film Festival.
Valery Todorovsky also co-produced the Russian gangster TV series Brigada (2002) (which eventually received a cult popularity) and the 2005 TV adaptation of the Master and Margarita.
Currently, he is mostly involved with producing TV serials for ORT.

Biography
Valéri est le fils du réalisateur Piotr Todorovski et de Mira Grigorievna Todorovskaïa, producteur de cinéma. En 1978, il tient le rôle du fils de l'héroïne principale dans le film de Youli Raizman Une femme bizarre. Il fait ses études à la faculté des scénaristes de l'Institut national de la cinématographie dans la classe d'Issaï Kouznetsov et Kira Paramonova et en sort diplômé en 1984. Il signe son premier film en tant que réalisateur en 1990, avec le drame Catafalque qui reçoit le Grand prix du festival du film de Mannheim. À quatre reprises (1994, 1998, 2002, 2008), Todorovski sera nominé pour le Nika de la meilleure réalisation. Il est membre du jury au Festival international du film de Moscou 1999. Dans une interview au quotidien Novaïa Gazeta en 2013, le réalisateur confie avoir la préférence pour le genre de feuilleton télévisé, ce qui explique qu'il vient d'en tourner un lui-même (Le Dégel). Perceived as "enemies of society", the stilyagi are forced to flee, with many of them getting caught and their clothing, ties or hair cut by the Komsomol for demonstrative purposes. Mels, a twenty-year-old paragon athletic student and member of the Komsomol, is ordered by Katia to chase one of the escapists, another young girl. The main character, a biologist named Victor Sluzhkin, loses his job and, to make ends meet, is forced to take a job in a local school as a geography teacher. His family has little money and lives in a dilapidated apartment in an old Soviet era building. His best friend is having an affair with his wife. The students in his class do not respect him and the assistant principal does not like his teaching methods. He feels lonely and depressed. To deal with the stresses of life, he drinks a lot. His alcohol-fueled binges provide a temporary respite, but no lasting comfort. When he organizes a trip on the river with a group of students from his class, it turns into a journey of self-discovery both for him and for the young men and women from his class.
