Namir is Egyptian, a Copt and now lives in France. When there is a family reunion, he buys an old video cassette recorded many years earlier at a religious holiday in his home village, when his mother said she had had a vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Namir realizes he has in his hands a very interesting subject for a documentary: he convinces his producer that it is a good idea and sets off on a journey that takes him back to his origins and puts his profession as a director to the test. However, he has not reckoned with his mother, the real protagonist of the story. Eventually, in her hometown, they recreate an apparition with the help of the other villagers.

Dave est un serveur dans la vingtaine vivant à Montréal et jouant Hamlet. D’origine autochtone, son adoption à l’âge de 3 ans a effacé tous ses souvenirs de sa culture d’origine. Lorsqu’il reçoit par la poste une photographie de sa mère biologique, Gertrude McKenzie, Dave se rend à Kinogamish afin de faire sa connaissance. Il réalise cependant rapidement qu’il n’est pas le bienvenu dans la réserve où il a vu le jour puisqu’il rencontre de l’hostilité de la part de Claude St-Onge, le chef de bande de Kinogamish, qui s’apprête à marier Gertrude. Néanmoins, Dave se lie d’amitié avec une jeune Innue nommée Osalic qui tente de se libérer de l’inceste dont elle est victime. Il fait également la rencontre de Sapatesh, un vieil aveugle qui lui en apprend davantage sur son père et sur les circonstances troublantes de sa mort.

The film is from the perspective of Gonzalo Infante, a privileged Chilean boy, during a time period in which the lower classes are politically mobilized, demanding more rights and forcing fundamental change. At the same time the upper middle class, including Gonzalo's own family, grow fearful of the growing socialist movement and plot against the country's elected president, Salvador Allende. Gonzalo's father, while sympathetic to the poor and not part of the right-wing movement, wants to leave the country to Italy, where he frequently travels for work, to avoid the Socialist policies. Sra. Infante is having an affair with a wealthy older gentleman, who gives Gonzalo gifts to keep him quiet. Gonzalo is sometimes bullied by his sister's boyfriend, who is a violent anti-Allende right-winger who uses nun-chucks to intimidate people. The family often buys products off of the black market, due to rationing and shortages.

The central character of the film is Harry Melchior, played by Heino Ferch and based on the real tunneler, Hasso Herschel. Parmi eux, la jolie Asya, une étudiante turque de passage au Québec avec qui il tombe amoureux.Progressivement, la vie change pour Atilla. Il trouve dans cette relation et dans le rapprochement avec Michel de bonnes occasions pour enfin faire la paix avec son passé douloureux.
