Kino International is a film and video distributor, founded by Bill Pence in 1977. Donald Krim bought Kino just months after its founding and served as president of the company until his death from cancer in 2011. Kino, based in New York City, specializes in art house films, such as low-budget current films, classic films from earlier periods in the history of cinema, and world cinema. Similar in many respects to The Criterion Collection, the home video releases by Kino are usually restored versions with substantial supplementary material.
Kino's theatrical arm handles theatrical distribution of much of the Janus Collection, and has a focus on recent art house and foreign films. Their non-theatrical arm has more of a focus on classic cinema, providing silent film classics which are otherwise difficult to find. They are the largest video distributor of silent films, including a great many from the early days of cinema (before 1914). These include important early landmark films by Thomas Edison, Georges Méliès, the Lumière brothers and D.W. Griffith. Many of those were restored by David Shepard's Film Preservation Associates.
In 2009, Kino International merged with Lorber HT Digital to form Kino Lorber. Kino International remains that company's imprint for world cinema titles, as well as American independents, documentaries, international classics, and silent cinema. The other Kino Lorber imprints are Lorber Films, Alive Mind, and Knitting Factory Entertainment.

Much of the film's focus is on the relationship of Aimie, a teenage Korean immigrant, and her best friend, Tran. Each is ambivalent about romantic feelings for the other and communicate through indirect means of hoping the other can read their mind, often followed by passive-aggressive tactics when such indirect communication inevitably leads to disappointment. Subplots concern Aimie's strained relationship with her mother, the absence of her father, and her increasing loneliness and isolation as she drifts apart from Tran.

Elderly Jewish writer Max Kohn (Otto Tausig) is an Austrian émigré whose mind is constantly working causing a state of perpetual confusion. Henri Kremer, a Catholic priest from Luxemburg, is imprisoned in Dachau. The film Amen. examines the links between the Vatican and Nazi Germany. The central character is Kurt Gerstein (Ulrich Tukur), a Waffen-SS officer employed in the SS Hygiene Institute, designing programs for the purification of water and the destruction of vermin. He is shocked to learn that the process he has developed to eradicate typhus, by using a hydrogen cyanide mixture called Zyklon B, is now being used for killing Jews in extermination camps. Gerstein attempts to notify Pope Pius XII (Marcel Iureş) about the gassings, but is appalled by the lack of response he gets from the Catholic hierarchy. The only person moved is Riccardo Fontana (Mathieu Kassovitz), a young Jesuit priest. Fontana and Gerstein attempt to raise awareness about what is happening to the Jews in Europe but even after Fontana appealing to the pope himself, the Vatican makes only a timid and vague condemnation of Hitler and Nazi Germany.

It is October 6, 1973, and Egypt along with Syria have continued their undeclared war on Israel by launching attacks in the Sinai Peninsula and Golan Heights.
