The Nikkatsu Corporation (日活株式会社, Nikkatsu Kabushiki-gaisha) is a Japanese entertainment company known for its film and television productions. It is Japan's oldest major movie studio. The name Nikkatsu amalgamates the words Nippon Katsudō Shashin, literally "Japan Motion Pictures".

Shareholders are Nippon Television Holdings (35%) and SKY Perfect JSAT Corporation (28.4%).

Fumiko Shimojō a deux enfants et son mariage avec un homme qui la trompe est malheureux. Poétesse, elle compose des tanka et participe à un cercle littéraire aux côtés de deux amis d'enfances, Kuniko et son mari Takashi Hori. Fumiko est secrètement amoureuse de Takashi Hori. Ce dernier la soutient dans sa création poétique mais il souffre d'une maladie incurable. Après avoir surpris son mari avec une amante, Fumiko demande le divorce et retourne vivre chez sa mère et son frère Yoshio, qui prépare son mariage prochain avec Seiko. Le divorce est à la fois un soulagement mais aussi un déchirement car elle doit laisser partir son fils Noburo vivre chez son ex-mari.

Oharu is the daughter of Kyōsai Shimura, a rōnin who now makes his living making umbrellas. She is in love with another rōnin, Reisaburō Asai, who lives next door, but he is being pursued by two of the town beauties, Otomi and Fujio. To make things even more difficult for Oharu, her father is obsessed with antiques, buying them even though he has little money and even when most of them eventually turn out to be fakes. A mistake, however, puts him deeply in debt to the local lord, Tanbanokami Minezawa, and he is confronted with having to sell Oharu in order to pay it off.

Yamato Teruo (Isamu Kosugi) returns to Japan after spending six years at an agricultural college in Germany. Teruo is the adopted son of an old samurai family, and is expected to marry the eldest daughter, Mitsuko (Setsuko Hara). However, Teruo has become infected with the idea of Western individualism during his stay in Europe, and refuses to bow to the demands of society. Instead, he confounds his future father-in-law Yamato Iwao (Sessue Hayakawa) by announcing that he intends to marry a German journalist, Gerda Storm (Ruth Eweler), whom he met on the ship back to Japan. Gerda, however, is a blond, chaste, Aryan woman, and will not agree to a mixed-race relationship. She attempts to convince him of his duty to the Japanese race and traditions and to reconcile him with his family.

Les archives de la police rapportent qu'il aurait déjà cambriolé 99 résidences de seigneurs pour un butin estimé de 7931 ryō. Poursuivi par les autorités, Jirokichi fuit vers Osaka par bateau. Lors d'une escale, il échappe à la police qui effectue une fouille grâce à la complicité de la belle Osen. Les deux jeunes gens deviennent amants et Jirokichi apprend que Nikichi, le frère d'Osen, un yakuza endetté, a pour projet de vendre sa sœur à une maison close.

Une française, muette, restaurée en 1999 par la Cinémathèque française à partir d'une copie-travail nitrate provenant de ses collections et une japonaise presque identique mais plus courte, il manque par exemple quelques scènes du mariage d'Orie et de Yukichi, mais commentée par un benshi. Les intertitres des deux versions comportent des différences. Le synopsis ci-dessous se base sur la version japonaise.

The three films focus on the travels of the kindly yakuza boss Kunisada Chūji. The existing print begins with Chuji on the road, fleeing the law while taking care of Kantaro, the son of a dead friend. He leaves Kantaro with Kabe Yasuemon, an honorable local boss, but is shocked to find out that his own men have been committing robberies using his own name. Angry, Chuji hits the road and eventually settles in another town, assuming another name and working as a clerk for a sake brewery. Okuma, the daughter of the brewer, falls in love with Chuji, but he ignores her. When he saves her brother from trouble with the Otozo gang, his identity is revealed and the police close in. Okume kills herself and Chuji flees, but the palsy he had been suffering from worsens and he is finally caught. His henchmen, however, succeed in rescuing him and bring him back to his home village. Unable to walk and confined to bed, Chuji is hidden in a storehouse. His woman, Oshina, discovers that one of his men has betrayed him, but it is too late. Despite the valiant efforts of his men to hold off the police, Chuji is finally arrested by the authorities.
