Jackie Morrison (Kate Dickie) works in Glasgow as a CCTV operator, monitoring the Red Road Flats. She has little to no personal life and engages in occasional sex with married colleague Avery (Paul Higgins). While watching a man and woman have sex in a laneway, Jackie recognises the man and begins inquiring about him. It is revealed that he is Clyde Henderson (Tony Curran), a prisoner who was released on good behaviour. She begins stalking Clyde, "accidentally" meeting him at different places. She learns he is sharing an apartment with fellow ex-con Stevie (Martin Compston) and works as a locksmith. She meets him at a cafe and learns he is throwing a party at the apartment. She breaks into his apartment, claiming to have been invited to the party. She begins exchanging looks with a drunk Clyde and they dance. Eventually, over time, she attends his parties and plans to frame him for raping her to have him sent back to prison. They have sex and she steals the condom, storming out. She returns to her apartment and stages rape on herself. She visits the police and they identify Clyde as the rapist and arrest him. A few days later, she returns to visit Clyde, but is met by Stevie. He demands to know why she is following Clyde and she reveals that he got high on crack cocaine and drove into a bus stop, instantly killing her husband and daughter. She intends to have him back to jail. Upon learning Clyde has a daughter, she calls the police and has them pull the charges. Clyde confronts Jackie about her scheme and they argue. He apologises for killing her family and asks for forgiveness. They make amends and go their separate ways.

Don Anderson is the Mickey's hamburger chain marketing director who helped develop the "Big One", its most popular menu item. Helena (Stephanie Leonidas) works with her parents (Gina McKee and Rob Brydon) at their family circus, but desires to run away and join real life. At the next performance, after Helena and her mother have a heated argument, Helena's mother collapses and is taken to the hospital. Ten days later, while Helena is staying with her grandmother, she finds that the doctors determine that Helena's mother requires an operation, and Helena can only blame herself for the situation. That night, she wakes up in a dream-like state and leaves her building to find three performers outside. As they try to perform for Helena, a shadow encroaches on the area and two of the performers are consumed by it. The third performer, Valentine (Jason Barry), a juggler, helps to quickly direct Helena to safety through the use of magical flying books. She learns they are in the City of Light which is slowly being consumed by shadows, causing its widely-varied citizens to flee. Soon Helena is mistaken for the Princess. She and Valentine are taken to the Prime Minister (Brydon). He explains that the Princess from the Land of Shadow stole a charm from the City of Light, leaving their White Queen (McKee) in a state of unnatural sleep and the City vulnerable to the Shadows. Helena notes the resemblance of the Queen and Minister to her mother and father, and offers to help recover the charm along with Valentine. They are unaware their actions are being watched by the Queen of Shadows (also McKee) who has mistaken Helena as the Princess of the Land of Shadows.

Jiney, an art and photography student, wins an award for her work. Her male friend and co-student, Anson, congratulates her but she tells him that although she won an award, she is unhappy with the work. Her friend Jas, who she lives with, takes her from school on a 'date' and they went out to take photographs. Jiney's mother tells her that she is going away on business for a month. Later, she witnesses a fatal car accident (see also Leave Me Alone) and takes photographs of it. She finds herself obsessed with death and begins to take photographs of more explicit death subjects - chickens being killed, fish being scaled, dead birds and others. She talks about suicide, and there are flashbacks to an apparent incident from her youth when she was sexually abused by some young boys.

Jiang Hu tells two stories simultaneously. The first is about a gang leader, Mr. Hung (played by Andy Lau), and the tensions that arise between him and his old friend and second-in-command, Lefty (played by Jacky Cheung), due to Mr. Hung's wife's recent childbirth. Now that Hung is with a child, Lefty feels that Hung should leave the gang business as he is now burdened with family and that will appear weak in character to their own under-bosses. Lefty also believes that it is his own turn to run the business in his own direction. However, Hung is unhappy with Lefty's leadership style of fear and brutality to keep his underlings in line, and is hesitant to cede power to Lefty. To further complicate matters, news of Hung becoming a father has spread unrest amongst his under-bosses, and there are rumours that someone has placed a hit on Mr. Hung. Suspicion as to who is plotting against Mr. Hung has been placed on three leading underbosses, resulting in Lefty sending loyal henchmen going on a hunt to locate and kill the bosses; one is killed and Mr Hung's henchmen save the other two on Mr Hung's orders. In the end, it is alluded that the guilty party attempts to call off the hit under the guise of checking on his family, however he was unable to follow through with the action after he was assured by Hung's henchman that his family is safe and untouched.
