Sun Pictures is a film distribution and production studio unit of Chennai based Sun Network owned by Kalanidhi Maran. Founded in 2000, it started producing the TV film Siragugal and distributing low-budget Tamil-language films, Kadhalil Vizhunthen being the first. Later, it went on to become one of the most powerful production, distribution houses in Tamil Cinema.

Ravi (Vijay) lives in Tuticorin. He aspires to become a policeman like his role model, Encounter Specialist Devaraj IPS (Srihari). After completing his Plus 2, he joins a college in Chennai and also earns a living by driving an auto rickshaw. During the course, he meets Suseela (Anushka Shetty) and falls in love with her instantly. Although Suseela rejects Ravi's advances at first, with the help of her grandmother (Sukumari), Ravi succeeds in winning Suseela's heart.

The story revolves around an insecure teetotaler Sarathy Raman (Karunas) who feels bad due to his dark skin (his wife Karthika is fairer than him) who is often the brunt of many jokes. Because he feels inferior to his wife, he begins to suspect her of infidelity and to think that she will one day elope with a lover. After a misunderstanding, Sarathy and his mother are estranged which further weakens the bond between Sarathy and Karthika. How Sarathy resolves his issues and gets back together with Karthika forms the rest of the story.

The story focuses on the life of Sabha (Nakul). He is the football crazy son of an alcoholic and lives in the slums. However, he lives a comfortable life and plays football with his mates as he completes his college career. He meets Meera (Sunaina) after an accident and later develops a liking for her. He slowly starts to love her but is afraid to express his love since she is rich and would react hastily. However, he later does confirm his love to her and she accepts. When Sabha leaves for a football match with his college, he promises that he will propose to her as soon as he gets back.Sabha returns from his match to only find out that Meera has died.
