In 1947, Dalton Trumbo (Bryan Cranston) was Hollywood’s top screenwriter until he and other artists were jailed and blacklisted for their political beliefs. Trumbo (directed by Jay Roach) recounts how Dalton used words and wit to win two Academy Awards and expose the absurdity and injustice under the blacklist, which entangled everyone from gossip columnist Hedda Hopper (Helen Mirren) to John Wayne, Kirk Douglas and Otto Preminger. The film also stars Diane Lane, John Goodman, Louis CK, Elle Fanning, and Michael Stuhlbarg.

Claude Verneuil, a Gaullist notary, and his wife Marie, a Catholic bourgeois from Chinon, are parents of four daughters: Isabelle, Odile, Ségolène, and Laure. The three eldest are already married to men, each one of a different religion and a different 'ethnic' origin: Isabelle married Rashid Ben Assem, a Muslim Arab, Odile married David Benichou, a Sephardi Jew, and Ségolène married Chao Ling, a Chinese man. The Verneuils pretend to accept their sons-in-laws but have had a hard time hiding their comfortability in accepting people into the family from outside the community. A family meeting is spoiled because of the awkwardness and clichés about race and religion, stated as much by the father as by the sons-in-laws who even exchange insulting communitarist views to and about each other.

Based on a true story, the film chronicles the relationship of a teacher with teenagers who have long since dropped out of the school system. While 23 years old nightporter Romain Esnard dreams about writing a great novel his father becomes a pensioner. When Romain's 85 years old grandmother Madeleine runs away from a retirement home, the family friction is rocketing. Eventually Romain receives a postcard from Madeleine who visits Normandy. He borrows his father's car and joins her. As he learns she once attended a certain school when she was a little girl. Thanks to an understanding female young teacher she is allowed to get to know the pupils who are now as old as she was when she had to leave back then. Yet in the end it turns out that all this joy has been too exciting for her health. Time has come for Romain to say adieu.

In 1985, Dallas electrician and rodeo cowboy Ron Woodroof is diagnosed with AIDS and given 30 days to live. He is soon ostracized by family and friends, gets fired from his job, and is eventually evicted from his home. At the hospital, he is tended to by Dr. Eve Saks, who tells him that they are testing a drug called zidovudine (AZT), an antiretroviral drug which is thought to prolong the life of AIDS patients—and is the only drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for testing on humans. Saks informs him that in the clinical trials, half the patients receive the drug and the other half are given a placebo, as this is the only way they can determine if the drug is working.

Le lycée Jules-Ferry n'affiche que 12 % de réussite au baccalauréat, ce qui fait de lui le pire lycée de France. L'inspecteur d'académie propose alors au proviseur d'engager les pires professeurs, en espérant que, paradoxalement, cela permettra au lycée de dépasser les 50 % de réussite ; faute de quoi, le lycée sera fermé. Sont alors engagés sept professeurs aux méthodes atypiques : Serge Cutiro (surnommé Tirocu par les élèves), un professeur dont on ne sait pas au départ la matière qu'il enseigne (juste excellent en maths, qui sera sa matière où il enseignera dans la suite) très fainéant, déclarant par exemple : « Aujourd'hui, on invente un exercice, on le fait, on le corrige, tout seul et en silence, hop c'est parti ! » ; Gladys, une professeur d'anglais tyrannique adepte du lancer de craie ; Albert, professeur de chimie féru d'expériences dangereuses et bizarres qui finissent la plupart du temps en explosion ; Amina, professeur de français aux courbes affriolantes ; Éric, professeur d’EPS adepte des exercices dangereux ; Maurice, professeur de philosophie québécois totalement incompréhensible (sauf quand il est sous l'emprise de l'alcool) ; et Antoine Polochon, professeur d'histoire idolâtrant Napoléon, et n'ayant jamais passé le CAPES.
