Synopsis
À la terrasse d'un pub, deux jeunes gens élégants (blazers et chapeaux de paille) jouent aux échecs. L'un d'eux, profitant d'un moment d'inattention de son partenaire, déplace une pièce décisive. L'autre s'en aperçoit, une querelle s'installe, le tricheur se voit pincer le nez et riposte en aspergeant son adversaire d'eau de Seltz. Ils en viennent aux mains, renversent la table, roulent à terre, disparaissant à nos yeux. Le combat se poursuit, hors-champ, une jambe surgit, un bras brandissant une chaussure, les canotiers traversent les airs, les cravates, les vestes giclent en tous sens… Le serveur arrive, scandalisé, et remonte (dans le champ de la caméra) les deux querelleurs, couverts d'ecchymoses et étourdis de coups.Comments

Dans une rue, un homme discute galamment avec une dame. Il descend malencontreusement sur la chaussée au moment où survient une calèche qui lui passe sur le corps, le cheval le piétinant de surcroît. L'attelage continue sa route, poursuivi par un policier présent au moment du drame. La dame essaie en vain de ramener la victime à la vie, ainsi qu'un passant qui ne peut que constater le décès et enlever cérémonieusement son chapeau devant la dépouille. Le policier ramène le cocher et lui montre le résultat de son imprudence. C'est alors que l'homme accidenté se relève miraculeusement, saisit la dame par la main et l'entraîne joyeusement hors de notre vue devant les curieux hilares.

The film is set in an empty park during autumn. The title character, Geri (voiced by Bob Peterson), is an elderly man who plays a game of chess against himself, "becoming" each of the players in turn by moving to the other side of the chessboard, where he changes his personality and either puts on or takes off his glasses to show this change. As the game progresses, it seems as though there are two people playing; at one point, the hands of both "opponents" are in frame. Black Geri (without the glasses) soon gains the upper hand over White Geri (with them), capturing every piece except his king and putting him in check. However, White Geri outsmarts Black Geri by faking a heart attack to distract him and spinning the board around. While Black Geri is still distracted, White Geri checkmates what is now his opponent's king. Finding that now he is the one with only his king left and discovering what has happened, Black Geri resigns the game and hands over a set of dentures as the prize. White Geri puts them in, then chuckles and grins in his victory, before the camera pulls back to reveal that he is alone at the chessboard.

In 1980, an annual gathering of teams of idiosyncratic nerds compete in a nondescript California hotel to see which of their computer programs can best the others at computer chess. A grandmaster (Gerald Peary) presides as master of ceremonies with a videographer and microphone in tow. Clunky, primitive personal computers are carted from room to room. Bad haircuts, dorky shirts, “birth control glasses”, and other social impedimenta are ubiquitous. Bull sessions on the dystopian possibilities of artificial intelligence are pursued. The Pentagon's interest in the goings-on is intimated. The only female geek (Robin Schwartz) in attendance is repeatedly hailed and “welcomed” by the MC.
