1944. Quelque part au bord du Danube. Des enfants, victimes de drames terribles, surgissent d'un peu partout. Ils maraudent pour vivre et mènent une existence à moitié sauvage, craignant autant leurs semblables que les adultes... Ils forment, petit à petit, une bande de "pillards" régie par la loi du plus fort. Les paysans les chassent à coup de fusil, les forces de l'ordre essayent de les maîtriser. The film opens with a sequence of fleeting images - the stamens of a flower, drops of oil on water, glowing embers, a spider's web, a strand of blonde hair, a leaf frozen in the ice, rain dripping from a wooden roof, etc. - each of which will subsequently be linked to one of Szindbád's memories of his love affairs. We then see the body of the dead or dying Szindbád lying in a cart drawn by a horse through the countryside, where nobody any longer seems interested in him. A voiceover (of Szindbád) then introduces a stream of memories, often disconnected and unchronological, of the many women who have been the focus of his life.

Following the quelling of Lajos Kossuth's 1848 revolution against Habsburg rule in Hungary, prison camps were set up for people suspected of being Kossuth's supporters. Around 20 years later, some members of highwayman Sándor Rózsa's guerrilla band, believed to be some of Kossuth's last supporters, are known to be interned among the prisoners in a camp. The prison staff try to identify the rebels and find out if Sándor is among them using various means of mental and physical torture and trickery. When one of the guerrillas, János Gajdar, is identified as a murderer by an old woman, he starts aiding his captors by acting as an informant. Gajdar is told that if he can show his captors a man who has killed more people than himself, he will be spared. Fearing for his life, he turns in several people his captors had been looking for by name, but could not identify among the prisoners.
