András Bálint (born 26 April 1943) is a Hungarian actor. He has appeared in over 75 films and television shows since 1958.

Biography

András Bálint a étudié à l'École supérieure d'art dramatique et cinématographique (Színház- és Filmművészeti Főiskola) de Budapest, d'où il sort diplômé en 1965. Il fait ses débuts au théâtre à Pecs, puis il est remarqué par István Szabó, qui lance sa carrière au cinéma avec L'Âge des illusions (1965). Ce film le rend populaire et il obtient ensuite le premier rôle dans plusieurs films de Szabó : Père (1966), Un film d'amour (1970), 25, rue des Sapeurs (1973), Contes de Budapest (1977). Dans la même période, il travaille aussi avec Miklós Jancsó : Ah ! ça ira (1969), Psaume rouge (1972); avec Félix Máriássy : Imposteurs (1969), András Kovács : Course de relais et Johannes Schaaf : Trotta (1971), et Zoltán Fábri : La Phrase inachevée (1975). Selon Jean-Loup Passek, Bálint « fait preuve d'élégance et de caractère dans chacune de ses compositions.

In the present day, German industrialist, Hans Wieck returns to Budapest with his family on the occasion of his 80th birthday having been stationed there during World War II. During dinner at his favorite restaurant, Szabo's, Hans regales his family and friends with stories of his many visits to the restaurant before and during the war. As he relishes his favorite dish, "Beef Rolls" he suddenly collapses with the song "Gloomy Sunday" being played, at his request, by two musicians. As he dies he sees a portrait of a beautiful woman taken many years before. The film then flashes back to Budapest during the late 1930s.

A body is discovered on a collective farm during harvesting in 1982. A subsequent search of adjacent woods, authorized by newly installed official, Viktor Burakov, turns up seven more bodies in varying stages of decomposition. The film tells the story of the subsequent eight-year hunt by forensic specialist Burakov for the serial killer responsible for the mutilation and murder of over 50 people, 35 of them below the age of 18. Burakov is promoted to detective and eventually aided, covertly at first, by Col. Mikhail Fetisov, his commanding officer and the shrewd head of the provincial committee for crime, and, much later, by Dr. Alexandr Bukhanovsky, a psychiatrist.
