Synopsis
As night falls on a farmyard in the French countryside, four masked bandits climb over the gate and break into the farmhouse. They bind and gag the farmer and his wife, and stab a male and female servant who attempt to help their masters. In an attempt to get the farmer to divulge where he has his money hidden, the bandits burn his feet with embers from the fireplace, but the farmer remains silent. When the bandits threaten to do the same to the farmer's young daughter, the farmer's wife gives in and reveals the money's hiding place. The bandits gather the money; just as they are attempting to flee, the farmer's wife tears off the bandit chief's mask, revealing his face. In retaliation for the unmasking, the bandit chief sets the house on fire, and the bandits escape in the confusion.Actors

Des bandits ont mis le feu à une ferme. Leur repaire est assiégé par les gendarmes. Ils s’enfuient, mais l’un d’eux est arrêté et emprisonné. Dans sa cellule, il voit la guillotine dans un cauchemar. On vient lui annoncer que son pourvoi en grâce est rejeté, on l’emmène et nous assistons à l’exécution capitale : sa tête tombe dans le panier et son corps est emporté dans une malle en osier.

In the village of Domrémy, the young Joan is visited by Saint Michael, Saint Catherine, and Saint Margaret, who exhort her to fight for her country. Her father Jacques d'Arc, mother Isabelle Romée, and uncle beg her to stay at home, but she leaves them and travels to Vaucouleurs, where she meets with the governor, Captain Robert de Baudricourt. The dissipated Baudricourt initially scorns Joan's ideals, but her zeal eventually wins him over, and he gives her authority to lead French soldiers. Joan and her army lead a triumphal procession into Orléans, followed by a large crowd. Then, in Reims Cathedral, Charles VII is crowned King of France.

In ancient Egypt, two priests deposit an ornate box inside a temple, locking the doors behind them. After their departure, a thief breaks into the temple and steals the box, but he is caught by a mysteriously appearing bearded figure. The bearded man retrieves the box and gives life to the two sphinx statues placed at the doors. The sphinxes appear as living women and attack the thief, whose head turns immediately into a donkey's head. The sphinxes turn back into statues, the bearded man disappears, and the donkey-thief is left sitting astonished on the ground.

On an empty stage, a magician (Méliès) multiplies himself and his chair to form an instrumental band, which he conducts in a lively piece of music. He then returns to each of his identical copies, and a giant ornamental fan appears behind him. Jumping up, the magician disappears in a puff of smoke before returning to the stage for a final bow.
