The film opens on Saturday, June 21, 1941. Sasha Akimov, a 15-year-old musician, and his older brother, Alexander, whose parents were killed in the Spanish Civil War, are serving with the Red Army at the Brest Fortress. Elsewhere, a commissar, Yefim Fomin, discovers he is unable to bring his family to Brest due to a shortage of train tickets. Another officer, Gavrilov, continues to express concern of the readiness of the fort's defenses should an attack come, despite warnings from his friend, Vanshtein, about his statements regarding an imminent war with Germany. The film takes place in Moscow and surrounding small-town areas in 1998 and 1999. Four friends - Kostya, Dimon, Lyokha, and Petya - find themselves pursued by both the mob and the police after a carjacking incident involving Dimon leads to an altercation that results in Lyokha accidentally killing an undercover law enforcement officer. En 1940, après la déroute de l'Armée Rouge à Khalkha un an auparavant, et alors que la Russie s'apprête à partir en guerre contre l'Allemagne nazie, un nouveau modèle de char doit être envoyé secrètement à Moscou pour être présenté, lors d'un défilé militaire, à Staline. Pourtant, ce dernier interdit le transport du tank par train ainsi que sa démonstration publique tant qu'il n'aura pas été testé sur le terrain afin de s'assurer de sa force indestructible. Fabriqué dans une usine de Kharkov par des ingénieurs et des métallurgistes, le T-34 s'avère être un blindé doté d'une grande puissance de feu. Son concepteur, Mikhaïl Kochkine, et quelques ouvriers décide d'outrepasser l'ordre de Staline et de faire traverser clandestinement plus de 800 kilomètres, en passant par la campagne soviétique, à deux prototypes pour prouver leur surpuissance militaire. Pourtant, leur route est rapidement traversée d'embûches et se transforme en course contre la montre pour arriver à temps sur la Place Rouge. Poursuivis par les nazis, Kochkine en profite pour prouver la puissance de ses nouveaux chars ainsi que la supériorité de l'armée soviétique.

In the late 2020s the world is in turmoil, with the United States fractured as a result of prolonged conflict and a pandemic of the "St. Mary's Virus" ravaging Europe. The United Kingdom is ruled as a fascist police state by the Norsefire Party. Political opponents, immigrants, Muslims, homosexuals and other "undesirables" are imprisoned in concentration camps. On November 4, a Guy Fawkes-masked vigilante identifing himself as "V" (Hugo Weaving) rescues Evey Hammond (Natalie Portman), an employee of the state-run British Television Network (BTN), from members of the "Fingermen" secret police while she is out past curfew. From a rooftop, they watch his demolition of the Old Bailey criminal court building, accompanied by fireworks and the 1812 Overture. Inspector Finch (Stephen Rea), Scotland Yard's Chief of Police, is tasked with investigating V's activities while BTN declares the incident an "emergency demolition". V interrupts the broadcast to claim responsibility and urges the people of Britain to rise up against their government. He asks them to meet him exactly one year later, on November 5, Guy Fawkes Night, outside the Houses of Parliament, which he promises to destroy. During the broadcast, the police attempt to capture V. Evey helps him escape but is knocked unconscious.
