Dr. Muller (Arliss), a friend to all, finds pleasure in turning the goodness in people to evil ends. He meets Marie Matin (Lucy Cotton) and her fiancé, Georges Roben (Roland Bottomley), while viewing a new painting, "The Martyr-Truth Crucified by Evil." Marie declares that the picture was wrong: Evil could never triumph over Truth, and though Muller says he agrees with her, he plots to prove otherwise. To this end, he entangles Marie with artist Paul de Veaux (Edmund Lowe), Georges's best friend, causing the latter's model, Mimi (Sylvia Breamer), to become jealous. Georges, believing that he is standing between Paul and Marie, releases Marie from her engagement. Marie finds Paul and Mimi alone together, late one evening, and turns back to Georges, whom she marries. This does not discourage Muller, who but for Marie's purity almost succeeds in his evil designs. As a last resort, Muller lures Marie to his apartment to trick her. There in a moment of dramatic conflict—she prays for help; a vision of a shining cross appears; and Muller is consumed in flames. Note: This was also the first film for Fredric March and Mrs. George Arliss.

À Londres, l'homme d'affaires et spéculateur Jackson Harber provoque une panique boursière. Dans le même temps, il "achète" la jeune Mary Conway à sa mère car il veut la "posséder". Mary, très futile, accepte ce "marché". Les "fiançailles" sont organisées au château d'Harber, donnant lieu à une fête grandiose, pleine de débordements et de débauche. Le fils du spéculateur, Eduard, arrive alors, accompagné de son précepteur, un prêtre. Ce dernier recueille la confession d'un mourant, le sculpteur Harry Lighton, venu là se suicider par désespoir, car la jeune fiancée, dont il était épris, l'a repoussée. Bientôt, Mary séduit Eduard et le pousse à tuer son père. Les deux jeunes gens sont arrêtés et condamnés à mort. Dans sa cellule, Mary se transporte en rêve à Sodome.

While the novel is told by a third-person narrator in strict chronological order, the film uses voice-over narration (the voice of Mildred). The story is framed by Mildred's interrogation by police after they discover the body of her second husband, Monte Beragon. The film, in noir fashion, opens with Beragon (Zachary Scott) having been shot. He murmurs the name "Mildred" before he dies. The police tell Mildred (Joan Crawford) that they believe the murderer is her first husband, Bert Pierce (Bruce Bennett). Bert has already been interrogated, and confessed to the crime. Mildred protests that he is too kind and gentle to commit murder, and goes on to relate her life story in flashback.
