Synopsis
En 1809, alors que Napoléon est aux portes de Vienne, le duc de Valois, prétendant au trône de France et exilé en Autriche, complote contre l'Empereur "usurpateur". Le fils du duc, Franz, est amoureux d'Agathe Klähr et demande à son père le consentement au mariage que celui-ci lui refuse. Désespérés, les deux jeunes gens se suicident. Le frère d'Agathe, Medardus, séduit alors la fille du duc, Helene, voulant en faire l'instrument de sa vengeance contre la famille des Valois. Les troupes napoléoniennes entrent à Vienne, bientôt en flammes, et Helene incite Medardus à tuer Napoléon...Actors

À Londres, l'homme d'affaires et spéculateur Jackson Harber provoque une panique boursière. Dans le même temps, il "achète" la jeune Mary Conway à sa mère car il veut la "posséder". Mary, très futile, accepte ce "marché". Les "fiançailles" sont organisées au château d'Harber, donnant lieu à une fête grandiose, pleine de débordements et de débauche. Le fils du spéculateur, Eduard, arrive alors, accompagné de son précepteur, un prêtre. Ce dernier recueille la confession d'un mourant, le sculpteur Harry Lighton, venu là se suicider par désespoir, car la jeune fiancée, dont il était épris, l'a repoussée. Bientôt, Mary séduit Eduard et le pousse à tuer son père. Les deux jeunes gens sont arrêtés et condamnés à mort. Dans sa cellule, Mary se transporte en rêve à Sodome.

In the early days of World War II, Cohan comes out of retirement to star as President Roosevelt in the Rodgers and Hart musical I'd Rather Be Right. On the first night, he is summoned to meet the President at the White House, who presents him with a Congressional Gold Medal (in fact, this happened several years previously). Cohan is overcome and chats with Roosevelt, recalling his early days on the stage. The film flashes back to his supposed birth on July 4, whilst his father is performing on the vaudeville stage.

In the days leading up to the Russian Revolution, Stephen Locke (Leslie Howard), a minor British diplomat, watches rioting in the streets. Revolutionary Elena Moura (Kay Francis) shoots it out with a Cossack soldier; when she retreats onto the grounds of the consulate, the soldier follows, forcing Stephen to intervene to protect British extraterritoriality.
