En Soap, (English: A Soap or Soap), is a 2006 Danish melodramatic comedy film directed by Pernille Fischer Christensen which incorporates many of the austere techniques of Dogme style. The movie, starring Trine Dyrholm and David Dencik, follows the turbulent relationship between an abrasive beauty clinic owner and a depressed pre-op transgender woman. Made on a budget of 1.5 million dollars, it was the first feature film directed by Christensen.
The film received mixed reviews. Some critics dismissed it for low-budget productions values and depressing characters, while others praised it for the quirky performances and Christensen's inventive techniques. The film won critical praise at film festivals and earned Christensen both a Jury Grand Prix Silver Bear and the Best First Feature Film Award at the 2006 Berlin Film Festival. A Soap received the Bodil Award for the 2007 Danish Film of the Year. Dyrholm's leading role earned her a third Bodil Award for Best Actress.

Hairdresser Ida, who has recently ended a successful breast cancer treatment, returns home to find her husband Leif cheating on her. At the same time, her daughter is getting married in an Italian villa with a lemon orchard in a few days, and on the way there she runs into Philip, the groom's father. At the wedding, which is eventually called off when the putative bride and groom find that they are not, after all, right for one another, Ida and Philip develop an attraction. On their return to Denmark, Philip decides to reduce his workload and move permanently to Italy. He finds Ida at the hairdressing salon where she works, only to be rebuffed as she has returned to Leif. But Ida then has second thoughts and goes to Italy to be with Philip.

Lars (Thure Lindhardt) leaves the Danish army after anonymous accusations of having made passes at some of his men prevent his promotion to a higher rank. Disillusioned, and angry at his overbearing social democrat politician mother, he falls in with a Neo-Nazi group and, after initial uncertainty, joins and is taken up as a promising new recruit. Lars then discovers the Nazis are homophobic as well as racist and practice gay-bashing. Michael Dorsey (Dustin Hoffman) is a respected but perfectionist actor. Nobody in New York wants to hire him anymore because he is difficult to work with. According to his long-suffering agent George Fields (Sydney Pollack), Michael's attention to detail and difficult reputation led a commercial he worked on to run significantly over-schedule, because the idea of a tomato sitting down was "illogical" to him. After many months without a job, Michael hears of an opening on the soap opera Southwest General from his friend and acting student Sandy Lester (Teri Garr), who tries out for the role of a hospital administrator Emily Kimberly but does not get it. In desperation, and as a result of his agent telling him that "no one will hire you", he dresses as a woman, auditions as "Dorothy Michaels" and wins the part. Michael takes the job as a way to raise $8,000 to produce a play, written by his roommate Jeff Slater (Bill Murray) and to star Sandy, titled Return to Love Canal. Michael plays his character as a feisty, feminist administrator, which surprises the other actors and crew who expected Emily to be (as written) another swooning female in the plot. His character quickly becomes a television sensation.

Rebeca, a TV news broadcaster, is at Madrid's airport anxiously awaiting the return of her mother whom she has not seen since she was a child.
