The film's plot takes place during the German occupation of Belgium in World War II, and focuses on the so-called Faux Soir, a satirical version of the German controlled newspaper Le Soir ("The Evening [News]") produced by the Belgian Resistance. The film's title is thus a pun, referring both to "An evening of joy", and "a Le Soir of joy". The film includes extensive footage of Brussels in the 1950s, where it was filmed on location.

Synopsis
En 1940, dès le début de l'occupation allemande en Belgique, le journal Le Soir cesse de paraître. Il est rapidement repris par des journalistes complaisants à l'égard de l'Occupant. En novembre 1943, un groupe de résistants bruxellois décide de publier un faux numéro du journal, dont les articles tourneront en dérision les Allemands. L'opération est méticuleusement préparée afin de substituer ce faux numéro au journal habituellement distribué en journée.Actors

During World War II, Lt. Kenan (Mario Drmać), a Bosniak classical musician, and Milan (Tarik Filipović), a Serb, live in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina in a clandestine gay relationship. When the Bosnian War breaks out in 1992, they try to escape from the city. In order to hide from Serbian militamen, Kenan disguises himself as a woman and Milan passes him of as his wife. Together, they go to Milan's village in Eastern Bosnia, a Serb stronghold, where they continue to live in deception. However, Milan is soon conscripted into the army and Kenan is left behind in the village. Ranka, a woman from the village, discovers Kenan's secret and seduces him.

In a Jewish ghetto in German-occupied Poland, a man named Jakob is summoned to the Gestapo office on a charge he broke the curfew. As the soldier who sent him there merely played a prank on him, he is released, but not before hearing a radio broadcast about the defeats of the German Army. As no one believes he went to the Gestapo and came out alive, Jakob makes up another tale, claiming he owns a radio – a crime punishable by death. He then starts encouraging his friends with false reports about the advance of the Red Army toward their ghetto. The residents, who are desperate and starved, find new hope in Jakob's stories. But it all ends as the Germans deport the people to their death in the extermination camps.

A young idealistic schoolteacher named Ruth Kirke (Deanna Durbin) is transporting a group of war orphans from South China to Calcutta when their steamship Tollare is torpedoed and sunk in the Pacific. Dès les premiers jours de sa captivité, le Caporal manifeste déjà un trait essentiel de son caractère. C'est un maniaque de l'évasion. Une première tentative, à laquelle participe à ses côtés Ballochet et Pater, ne parvient même pas à dépasser le mur d'enceinte du camp. Ce premier échec ne décourage pas le Caporal et Pater qui referont un essai – toujours manqué…- dans le wagon qui les emporte vers l'Allemagne. Et les tentatives continuent ! Un essai de fuite de la fabrique de briques où ils travaillent se termine, pour Pater et le Caporal, aux pieds d'une sentinelle… Décidés d'opérer de façon plus « scientifique », les deux amis se préparent des costumes de ville, en teignant en noir des uniformes. L’opposition d'un adjudant les oblige à retarder leur projet et c’est avec Penche à gauche que le Caporal prend la fuite. Cette fois, ils parviennent à prendre le train, aidés par une voyageuse qui n’est autre qu’un prisonnier français déguisé. Cette évasion mènera le Caporal un peu plus loin que les précédentes… à la gare suivante, où il se fera encore arrêter. Après un séjour dans un camp disciplinaire, le Caporal persiste dans ses intentions et grâce à Erika, une jeune allemande, il parvient à se procurer des vêtements civils pour Pater et pour lui. Dans le train qui roule vers la France, l'espoir des deux évadés grandit d'instant en instant. Un bombardement providentiel les sauvera d'un mauvais pas. Les voici à la frontière, la France est en vue…

The picaresque story follows its protagonist, Pasqualino (Giannini) who, as a dandy and small-time hood in Naples, to save the family honour, is sent to prison for killing a pimp (and then dissecting the victim and placing the body in suitcases) who had turned Pasqualino's sister into a prostitute. Convicted and sent to prison, Pasqualino succeeds in being transferred to a psychiatric ward. Desperate to get out, he volunteers for the Italian Army, but then somewhere in Germany he deserts with a comrade. They are captured and sent to a concentration camp. There, in a bid to save his own life, Pasqualino decides to survive by providing sexual favors to the obese and ugly female commandant (Stoler). His plan succeeds, except for the fact that he is then put in charge of the barracks as a kapo, and is obliged to select six men to be killed under the threat that if he doesn't do so, they will all be killed. Pasqualino ends up executing the soldier with whom he was captured and being responsible for the death of another fellow prisoner, a Spanish anarchist. At the war's end, upon his return to Naples, Pasqualino discovers that his seven sisters, his fiancée and even his mother have all survived through prostitution.

The film opens with Sir John Falstaff and Justice Shallow walking through the snow, then to a warm fire inside the Boar's Head Tavern as the two reminisce. After a main credit sequence, the narrator explains that King Henry IV of England has succeeded Richard II, whom he had killed. Richard II's true heir, Edmund Mortimer, is a prisoner in Wales, and Mortimer's cousins Northumberland, Worcester and Northumberland's son Hotspur demand that Henry rescue Mortimer. Henry refuses and Northumberland, Worcester and Hotspur begin to plot his overthrow.

Carmela, Paulino, and Gustavete - who is mute as the result of an explosion - are a trio of travelling vaudeville performers. Amidst the chaos of the Spanish Civil War, they are in the town of Montejo, entertaining republican troops with their variety show. They are survivors who are motivated, not exactly by patriotism, but by a desire for self-preservation. Their show consists of four acts. It begins with Carmela singing and dancing a traditional song. The audience is enthusiastic during her performance, but the mood changes completely when the sound of approaching nationalist planes is heard.
