Synopsis
En 1944, dans un village italien qui pourrait s'imaginer épargné par la guerre, un fermier, l'oncle Tigna, héberge en cachette deux soldats américains. L'un d'eux, un Noir, est grièvement blessé. Un médecin soignera le blessé. Bientôt rétabli, le G. I. fait la fête, mais le seul Allemand du village, un caporal en faction, arrive à l'improviste chez l'oncle Tigna. En dépit des précautions prises par les villageois, les deux hommes finissent par se retrouver face-à-face. Totalement éméchés, les soldats ennemis fraternisent. Les habitants de la petite commune croient la guerre finie et la paix installée. Mais une patrouille allemande arrive juste avant la venue imminente des Américains et l'oncle Tigna sera abattu.Actors

In occupied Rome (an open city after 14 August 1943), German SS troops are trying to arrest the engineer Giorgio Manfredi, a communist and a leader of the Resistance against the Nazis and Fascists, who is staying in a rooming house. The landlady warns him in time of the Germans' arrival, so that he can elude them by jumping across the rooftops. He goes to the home of another Resistance fighter, Francesco. There he encounters Pina who lives in the next apartment. Pina is Francesco’s fiancée, and is visibly pregnant. She first suspects Giorgio of being a cop and gives him a rough time, but when he makes it clear he is not, she welcomes him into Francesco’s apartment to wait for him. With Pina’s help (she is also part of the Resistance), Giorgio contacts Don Pietro Pellegrini, a Catholic priest who is also helping the Resistance, and asks him to transfer messages and money to a group of Resistance fighters outside the city: because Giorgio is now known to the Gestapo, he cannot do it himself.

The young Miloš Hrma, who speaks with misplaced pride of his family of misfits and malingerers, is engaged as a newly trained station guard in a small railway station during the Second World War and the German occupation of Czechoslovakia. He admires himself in his new uniform, and looks forward, like his prematurely-retired railwayman father, to avoiding real work. The sometimes pompous stationmaster is an enthusiastic pigeon-breeder with a kind wife, but is envious of the train dispatcher Hubička's success with women. Miloš holds an as-yet platonic love for the pretty young conductor Máša. The experienced Hubička presses for details of their relationship and realizes that Miloš is still a virgin.
