L’histoire se passe à São Paulo et met en scène Clara, sans emploi qui habite les quartiers pauvres, embauchée par la riche Ana enceinte, pour l’aider pendant sa grossesse et par la suite avec le bébé. Ana se prépare a être mère célibataire, étant tombée enceinte d'un inconnu rencontré dans un bar et son fiancé ayant rompu avec elle à cette annonce. Héléna réalise un vieux rêve : ouvrir un petit commerce. Elle loue un local abandonné et monte son affaire. Mais son mari Otávio perd subitement son travail et toute la famille est fragilisée. At Dark Waters, a Native American sacred land containing an enigmatic swamp spirit, a teenager is murdered by a plant-like monster. The following day, young replacement sheriff Kyle Williams reaches Bywater and meets with deputy sheriff Fraser, who tells him the previous sheriff is among 47 missing persons since oil tycoon Fred Schist bought the ancient tribal lands from shaman and Seminole chieftain Ted Sallis, the first to disappear. Schist claimed Sallis had sold legally and escaped with the money, and asked the sheriff for help: Local protestors opposed his perfectly legal activities, and mestizo scoundrel Renee Laroque was sabotaging his facilities. Williams investigated this while trying to find an explanation for the missing people, some of which were found brutally murdered with plants growing from inside their bodies. Photographer Mike Ploog and shaman Pete Horn tell Williams local legends about the guardian spirit, suggesting that it could be real.

Rowf (a Labrador-mix) and Snitter (a smooth fox terrier) are two of many dogs used for experimental purposes at an animal research facility in the Lake District of north-western England. Snitter has had his brain experimented upon while Rowf has been drowned and resuscitated repeatedly. One evening, Snitter squeezes under his cage and into Rowf's, where they discover his cage is unlatched. Eager to escape the tortures of life inside the facility, they explore, knocking over other cages and finally sneaking into the incinerator, where they are nearly killed before escaping.

In Muromachi period Japan, an Emishi village is attacked by a demon. The last Emishi prince, Ashitaka, kills the demon before it reaches the village, but its corruption curses his arm in the battle. The curse gives him superhuman fighting abilities, but will eventually kill him. The villagers discover that the demon was once a boar god, Nago, corrupted by an iron ball lodged in his body. The village's wise woman tells Ashitaka that he may find a cure in the western lands Nago was exiled from.

In the wilderness of Oregon, a prairie dog screams after Riggs' (Rob Riggle) car passes by and throws a cigar at it. This causes an unnamed raccoon to signal a mink to release a boulder that pushes Riggs' car to the edge of a cliff, teetering back and forth. After that, the raccoon throws the cigar back to Riggs, who yells "you're a bad raccoon!". The raccoon then blows the car down the cliff. Riggs quits Mr. Lyman's company, so a real estate developer from Chicago, Dan Sanders (Brendan Fraser), is brought in as his replacement. He is given the task of turning the forest into a residential development by his boss Neal Lyman (Ken Jeong). This all transpires much to the objections of Dan's son, Tyler (Matt Prokop), who discovers that Rocky Springs is a forest reserve. He warns his father that "many have tried to conquer it but they all fail". His wife Tammy (Brooke Shields) is unhappy in Rocky Springs, she misses her life in Chicago. Unfortunately for Dan, the animals, who are led by the raccoon refuse to sit back and watch their forest to be destroyed. They manage to turn the tables on him by disturbing his progress, interrupting his meetings, and humiliating him. So Dan signs orders to have a forest ranger capture and cage all the animals.
