Synopsis
Dayashankar (Amrish Puri) is a wealthy NRI living in London. His daughter Pooja (Madhuri Dixit) is the apple of his eye and his life revolves around her and his wife Parvati (Reema Lagoo). Dayashankar also takes care of his deceased friend's son Amar (Saif Ali Khan). Amar and Pooja have grown up with each other and he has fallen in love with her over time. Studying in Edinburgh, he is overjoyed when he is called to come stay with the family in London. He eagerly prepares for his meeting with Pooja and plans to ask her father for her hand in marriage.Actors

Sameer (Salman Khan) is a hot-tempered person with terrible anger management issues ever since his parents died in his childhood. In the beginning, we see Jimmy Cliff (Saif Ali Khan), a call center executive who also teaches English, as the narrator. Pooja Singh (Kareena Kapoor) shows up outside his class and says she needs private tutoring. Without any hesitation, Jimmy quickly agrees as he has already fallen in love with her; he later finds out that Pooja's boss Bhaiyyaji (Anil Kapoor) is the one who has to be tutored. As their love grows, Pooja reveals that she is only working for Bhaiyyaji to pay her debts so she can then go to Haridwar to scatter her father's ashes. They decide to steal Bhaiyyaji's money and run away. The couple succeeds in their mission, and Jimmy asks Pooja to guard the money while he goes to the call center to tell them he is leaving.

Young Raj Malhotra (Akshay Kumar) lives with his elder brother, Rohit his sister-in-law Kiran, and a niece. After an accident fractures his leg, he is unable to walk for some time. Due to psychological reasons, he cannot walk even after the fracture heals. When the Malhotras move to Dehra Dun, Raj befriends their neighbour, young tomboy Kajal (Lara Dutta), as both share a common passion for aeroplanes. Kajal encourages Raj to walk, and he succeeds. Years later the two continue to be fast friends, and everyone expects them to marry soon. Raj secretly loves Kajal and is waiting for the right time to propose her. However, Kajal sees him only as her best friend. Raj is recruited by the Indian Air Force and goes for training for a year and a half. After his training gets over, he rushes to Kajal to propose her, only to find out that she has given her heart to a multimillionaire, Karan Singhania (Aman Verma). Raj tells Kajal that Karan is the best life partner for her, but does not reveal his true feelings. Kajal and Karan get married and during the reception party, Kajal comes to know about Raj's feeling for her. Hurt by the fact that she did not see his feelings for her despite being Raj's best friend, Kajal asks him to move on in his life as now she is a married woman. Thereafter the Malhotras move to Nainital, and Raj relocates to Cape Town for training.

Governor Jaisingh Sinha (Raj Babbar) is a popular and prominent political figure of the state, besides being well known as an upright person. One day, Gov. Sinha presides over a meeting on the issue of "Open Door Policy", a scheme which will pave the way for foreign companies to operate in India, by implementing usage of computer, industrial machinery etc. The meeting is attended by influential industrialist Meghnad Chaudhry (Dalip Tahil), Union leader Vilas Rao (Sharat Saxena) and minister Mantriji (Prem Chopra), among others. While Chaudhry is in favour of the policy because it would generate foreign investment in India, Vilas Rao strongly opposes the policy which would bring with it the unemployment of a large number of workers because of the utilization of computers and industrial machinery. The difference of opinion of Chaudhry and Vilas Rao leads to a heated argument between the two for which Gov. Sinha terminates the meeting without arriving at any decision on the policy.
