Adventures of Gallant Bess is a 1948 American contemporary Western film directed by Lew Landers and filmed in Cinecolor. It has no relation to producer Matthew Rapf's father Harry Rapf's film Gallant Bess.

Synopsis

Drifting and down on his luck cowboy Ted Daniels captures a beautiful mustang, names her Bess and teaches her a variety of tricks. Fate turns on him when he rides Bess into town where she causes expensive damage to motor vehicles as Ted drinks in a bar. Ted thinks his luck will change by winning a large prize in a local rodeo, but the unscrupulous carnival owner, who wants Bess to appear in his show, has one of his stooges cover the horns of the steer Ted is to wrestle with slippery oil breaking Ted's leg in the process.

In 1949, young cowboy John Grady Cole's maternal grandfather dies. John had grown up on his grandfather's ranch, but it was put up for sale when the old man died. His mother has no ties to it anymore, and would rather have the money. In Reno, Nevada, Roslyn Tabor (Monroe) is a beautiful 30-year-old woman who has just gotten a quickie 6 week divorce from her inattentive husband Raymond (McCarthy). After leaving the Washoe County Courthouse, Roslyn's best local friend, Isabelle Steers, (Ritter) takes her to a bar at Harrah's Reno for drinks to let the reality of her divorce sink in. While there, they meet an aging cowboy named Gaylord 'Gay' Langland (Gable) and his tow truck driver friend Guido (Wallach). They invite Roslyn and Isabelle to Guido's place in the Nevada country to help her forget about the divorce, after Gay tells Roslyn that he is too divorced. They arrive at the un-finished house Guido had built for his wife, who had died several years earlier during childbirth. They drink and dance. Roslyn has too much to drink, so later Gay drives her home to Reno.
