Aladdin Aur Jadui Chirag (Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp) is a 1952 fantasy adventure film produced and directed by Homi Wadia. Made under the Basant Pictures banner, it had story, scenario and additional dialogue by JBH Wadia. The dialogues were written by Teznath Zar. The music of the film was composed by S. N. Tripathi and Chitragupta. The film starred Meena Kumari, Mahipal, S. N. Tripathi, B. M. Vyas, Pandit Amarnath and Raja Sandow.

This fantasy film from the Arabian Nights followed the adventures of Aladdin and his finding of the magic lamp in the cave, and his love for the princess Badar.

Synopsis

The film starts in a magician’s den in a cave where the magician, Hikmat (S. N. Tripathi) tells a genie-like figure that he wants to rule the world. He is asked to get the magic lamp from a cave where he will need to send someone who is honest and has twenty-one moles in the shape of a lamp on his hand. The magician finds Aladdin (Mahipal) who is in love with Princess Badar (Meena Kumari). Badar's father has been imprisoned and a look-alike substituted in his place by the evil minister Masood Beg. Masood Beg's son, Nazim has Aladdin whipped for a minor fracas and the magician tends to him. He takes Aladdin to the cave and sends him down to get the lamp. When Aladin refuses to hand over the lamp before coming out, Hikmat slams the entrance shut leaving Aladdin trapped. Aladdin manages to rub the lamp and a genie appears. The genie helps Aladdin get out of the cave, marry the princess, free Badar’s father, have him reinstated as the Sultan and build a palace for him. The story follows the magician getting hold of the lamp and Aladdin’s adventures from then on till he gets the lamp back and manages to vanquish evil.

Ezra (Sohrab Modi) is a jeweller who has a son called Elijah. He also has a friendly butler/child minder called Emmanuel. In the beginning, Ezra is due to leave. As he does, Elijah becomes upset and stands at the balcony. In the roads of the Jewish area, Brutus (Nazir Hussain), Governor of Rome, is passing, making an announcement. Watching over the balcony, is Elijah. A stone slips from his hand and hits Brutus on the head. Brutus immediately gets Elijah arrested, and as Elijah is a Jew, sentences him to death. Hearing this, Ezra rapidly returns from his trip and arrives at the doorstep of Brutus. He begs Brutus to free Elijah but Brutus feeds Elijah to hungry lions. Ezra sadly returns to his house. In revenge, Emmanuel kidnaps Lydia, motherless daughter of Brutus, and takes her to Ezra. Ezra declines to kill Lydia and adopts the child.

This movie is about the tawaif Sahibjaan (Meena Kumari), who is born to a courtesan, Nargis (also Meena Kumari). After being spurned by her lover Shahabuddin's (Ashok Kumar) family, Nargis is driven to a graveyard where she gives birth to Sahibjaan secretly. Nargis dies during childbirth and her sister Nawabjaan (Veena)- a brothel madam - brings her up as her own. When Salim renames her Pakeezah (pure of heart) and takes her to a cleric to be legally married, she refuses and returns to the brothel. Salim eventually decides to marry someone else and invites Sahibjaan to dance at his wedding; she agrees. During this event, Nawabjaan recognises Shahabuddin and calls him to witness the irony of the situation: It is his own daughter dancing and entertaining his family.
