American Standoff is an American 2002 documentary film by Kristi Jacobson which documents much of a strike by the Teamsters against a package delivery company, Overnite Transportation (now a subsidiary of United Parcel Service). The film follows the strike from early 2000 to mid-2001.

Synopsis

The Teamsters' strike against Overnite began on October 24, 1999. James P. Hoffa had been elected president of the Teamsters in the fall of 1998, and had campaigned on a promise to unionize Overnite and securing a contract for its 13,000 workers. The Teamsters represented only a fraction of Overnite's workers, but believed they could use other means to win company recognition of the union. Initially, about 2,000 workers walked the picket line in 12 states. The strike turned violent, however, and both sides accused the other of bribery, spying, intimidation and more. By August 2002, only 300 to 600 workers remained on strike. The Teamsters called the strike off without securing a contract or union recognition.

Le film relate la grève dans l'usine de textiles Rhodiacéta de Besançon, en mars 1967, au travers des témoignages des ouvriers sur leurs conditions de travail et motivations. Cette grève a pris un aspect particulier de par l'assimilation du plan culturel du plan social : les revendications ne tournent plus seulement autour de l'entreprise (salaires ou sécurité de l’emploi), mais aussi sur le mode de vie que la société imposait notamment à la classe ouvrière. Les ouvriers grévistes qui occupent l'usine ont à leur disposition du matériel pour filmer les événements, grâce à Chris Marker, Jean-Luc Godard ainsi que Bruno Muel. Comme le Mai rampant italien, cette grève est une sorte d'avant-coureur de la vague de fond de mai 68.

Filmmakers James Hanlon and the Naudet brothers were originally filming Tony Benetatos, a probationary firefighter of the New York City Fire Department assigned to the Engine 7/Ladder 1/Battalion 1 Firehouse on Duane Street in Lower Manhattan with the intention of making a film about the "probie's" first experience as a firefighter. On the morning of September 11, the firehouse, under the direction of Battalion Chief Joseph Pfeifer, was called out on a reported "odor of gas" at Church and Lispenard Streets. Jules rode with Pfeifer to investigate, while Gedeon stayed behind at the firehouse with the "probie.
