Bill (Sam Rockwell), a divorced deadbeat dad, is estranged from his teenage daughter Molly (Shana Dowdeswell). His friend Terry (Rob Corddry) is a high school principal who gives him a job as the coach for the girls' varsity basketball team. Robin Ramzinski, better known by his ring name Randy "The Ram" Robinson (Mickey Rourke), is a professional wrestler who became a celebrity in the 1980s. Now past his prime, Randy wrestles on weekends for independent promotions in New Jersey while working part-time at a supermarket under Wayne (Todd Barry), a demeaning manager who mocks Randy's wrestling background. Lucas Bly (Haim) is an extremely intelligent and nerdy 14-year-old high school student. He soon becomes acquainted with Maggie (Green), an attractive older girl who had just moved to town. After meeting Lucas on one of his entomological quests, Maggie befriends him, spending time with him during the remainder of the summer until school begins. El Mariachi is recruited by CIA agent Sheldon Sands to kill General Emiliano Marquez, a corrupt Mexican Army officer who has been hired by Mexican drug lord Armando Barillo to assassinate the President of Mexico and overthrow the government. Many years before, El Mariachi and his wife Carolina confronted Marquez in a shootout and wounded the general; in retaliation, Marquez took the lives of Carolina and their daughter in an ambush. The beginning starts in the Shooting Star gym. McKenna is practicing her backhand spring on the beam. Coach Isabelle tells McKenna that the move she was doing is too advanced. McKenna tries to protest, but loses. Then the coach tells her to just stretch. As McKenna is feeling depressed, her best friend Toulane comes over and tells McKenna she was great. She then gets on about how the two of them will get into the 2016 Summer Olympics. Toulane explains that she will be on the podium with her gold, and McKenna next to her with her silver. McKenna tells her that she will get a gold instead. The two get back to gymnastics until McKenna's grandma comes into the gym with McKenna's twin younger sisters, Maisey and Mara. The four of them leave the gym.

Dewey Finn is a guitarist and member of the rock band No Vacancy. However, he is unanimously voted out of the band due to his onstage antics. Dewey shares an apartment with his friend Ned Schneebly, a former rocker now substitute teacher, and his bossy girlfriend Patty Di Marco, who threatens to kick him out unless he pays his overdue rent. One day, Dewey answers a phone call from Principal Rosaline Mullins of the prestigious Horace Green prep school, inquiring for Ned about a short-term position as a substitute. Realising the pay would be high, Dewey pretends he is Ned and is hired. Meeting the tightly wound Mullins, Dewey adopts the name “Mr. S” and spends his first day being lazy, much to the class’ confusion.
