The Portuguese want to set up an army base in Vasanthapuri, a zameen in Tamil Nadu, India. They approach Diwan (M.N. Nambiar), a corrupt citizen of the area and decide to make him the king if he agrees to carry out the plan. He subsequently agrees, but none of the local people are happy and protest against this. Hence he starts killing them in large numbers. One of the civilians Anand (R. Muthuraman), who lost his father in the shootout, swears that he will have revenge for the outrage when his close friend Bharath (Sivaji Ganesan), son of a General (S. V. Ranga Rao) returns from abroad. Meanwhile, Chitralekha (Kanchana), the princess of Vasanthapuri is living in Zurich, and is completely unaware that her zameen is in danger. She sees Bharath's photo in a local daily, and finds out that he is also from Vasanthapuri. She reads that he came first in the University of Bern, and develops interest in meeting him. That night, Chitralekha meets him at a club and congratulates him for his performance, while introducing herself as "Vasanthi" to hide her true identity. Quickly, they both fall for each other.

Sreekanth is a famous psychiatrist and has earned much praise from his mentor and people in the town. He is in love with Venniradai Nirmala. One day he is assigned a task to cure a mentally unstable women (Jayalalitha) who lives in Ooty. Srikanth informs about this to her lover and request her to wait for him until he finishes this case. Srikanth promises he will return for her and sets out to Ooty. On arriving, he is been welcomed by Jayalalaitha's parents who are very much distressed with their daughter's condition. Srikanth questions them about her past but they conceal initially as it might have a severe consequence on her future. Upon reiteration that knowing her past will be very useful for him to cure her, Jayalalitha parents reveal her awful past. Jayalalitha at a very young age got married and within hours, the couple meet with an accident and her spouse dies. Due to the aftermath of the accident and upon learning her husband's death, Jayalalitha loses her mental stability. As days pass by, Srikanth cures her for good. Her parents are happy on learning that Jayalalitha has completely forgotten her past to begin a new life. Jayalalitha begins to fall in love with Srikanth but is reluctant to profess her love to him, instead she tells her parents. Srikanth upon learning this fears that she might go back to her old condition if she learns that a girl is awaiting him. Srikanth having no courage, informs about this to Jayalalitha's parents. Srikanth marries Venniradai Nirmala and Jayalalitha on the other hand tells she indeed remembers her past and wears a white saree (tradition where in women wears a white saree after her spouse death) and convinces herself that this her destiny.

Baskar (Gemini Ganesan) and Vasanthi (Saroja Devi) are college mates. A naughty girl creates misunderstanding between them, and an enraged Vasanthi complains to the college dean, who immediately dismisses Baskar. Now left homeless, Baskar however manages to get employed at a Tea Company, and gets to stay with his close friend Sampath (K. A. Thangavelu). Vasanthi approaches Baskar and apologises for her cruel act. Baskar forgives her, and they both fall in love. Viswanathan (T. S. Balaiah) is an arrogant, money-minded estate owner who lives in a bungalow called Chinnamalai Estate near Pollachi. His son Chellappa (Nagesh) is an aspiring filmmaker; Chellappa is the antithesis of his father and voices his displeasure at his father's arrogance. Viswanathan also has two daughters; Kanchana (Kanchana) and Nirmala (Rajasree). Kanchana is in love with her college mate Vasu (R. Muthuraman), the son of a rich Chennai-based businessman Sachidanandam (V. S. Raghavan). The sisters return home after completing their education in Chennai. One day while out sightseeing, a battered car driven by their father's young, rebellious estate manager Ashok (Ravichandran) bumps into their car. The sisters quarrel with Ashok and are annoyed by his insolence. At their home, they force Viswanathan to dismiss Ashok. Infuriated, Ashok pitches a tent overlooking their bungalow and begins a strike to get his job back. Nirmala accidentally drops a bucket of water on Ashok's head, hurting him. Feeling guilty, she visits Ashok's tent to apologise and they fall in love.
