Kalyana Parisu (English: Wedding Gift) is a 1959 Indian Tamil romantic drama film directed by C. V. Sridhar in his debut. The film stars Gemini Ganesan, B. Saroja Devi and C. R. Vijaykumari in the lead roles, while K. A. Thangavelu, M. Saroja, Akkineni Nageshwara Rao and M. N. Nambiar play supporting roles. A triangular love story, the film is about a young man who rents a house near his girlfriend, but the girl's elder sister is not aware of their romance. She subsequently falls for the man and wishes to marry him, so her younger sister decides to sacrifice her love, unknown to the former.

The film was critically acclaimed and commercially successful, leading to a Telugu remake titled Pelli Kanuka (1960) which starred Nageshwara Rao in the lead, with Saroja Devi reprising her role. Sridhar later remade the film in Hindi as Nazrana (1961) which starred Raj Kapoor and Vyjayanthimala in the lead, along with Gemini Ganesan in a different role. A second Telugu remake titled Devatha was released in 1982, and a second Hindi remake in Hindi titled Tohfa in 1984; both directed by K. Raghavendra Rao.

Synopsis

Baskar (Gemini Ganesan) and Vasanthi (Saroja Devi) are college mates. A naughty girl creates misunderstanding between them, and an enraged Vasanthi complains to the college dean, who immediately dismisses Baskar. Now left homeless, Baskar however manages to get employed at a Tea Company, and gets to stay with his close friend Sampath (K. A. Thangavelu). Vasanthi approaches Baskar and apologises for her cruel act. Baskar forgives her, and they both fall in love. Vasanthi lives with her mother and her elder sister Geetha (Vijaykumari) who is unmarried. Baskar rents the vacant portion of their house. Over time, Vasanthi passes her exams and gets employed.

Raj (Gemini Ganesan) meets Shanti (Vyjayanthimala) at a cricket match in Madras, and falls in love with her. Shanti does not reciprocate his love, and leaves to her home place Bangalore. Shanti’s father Sokkalingam (K. A. Thangavelu), a widower, marries Thangam (M. Saroja). They decide to go to Kashmir for their honeymoon, and Shanti also wants to come. Sivalingam, a friend of Sokkalingam suggests an alliance between Shanti and his nephew Raj (M. N. Nambiar) who is now in Madras. Raj has secretly married Lalitha. He ditches Lalitha, when he sees this new alliance and leaves for Bangalore, but misses the train. Just then Raj (Gemini Ganesan) arrives in Bangalore for a different reason, and Sokkalingam misinterprets him as his friend’s nephew. Sokkalingam and wife Thangam leave for Kashmir along with Raj Ganesan and Shanti, who still dislikes Raj Ganesan.
