Kali, Shankar and Tithi are the three motherless children of the acting priest of a local Krishna temple in an anonymous small town/village in West Bengal. The local MLA Debu Soren’s henchmen kill their father because he insists on standing witness in court against a murder committed at Soren’s behest. Kali, the elder brother, kills the corrupt lawyer as he walks out of the courtroom after the judge has delivered his judgement. Kali goes to jail for ten years. Shankar meets with a freak accident and is brought up by a local Muslim fakir. But the accident has left him with a memory loss and a penchant for violence. He grows up to be one of Debu Soren’s favourite henchmen. The little girl Tithi, who is picked off the streets by the maid of Debu’s mistress, grows up to become a wayward girl on the verge of turning alcoholic.

Sania (Prashant Nanda) lives with his ailing mother and friend Makara in village. They are fisherman by profession. One day they find a girls named Manika (Mahasweta Roy) in the river and rescues her. Sania brings the girls to his home and they look after the girl. After Manika gets well Sania & Makara decides to return Manika to their parents. When they reaches Manika's village, Manika/s parents refuses to return her back as she lives with the lower cast people for some days. As no other way out, Sania takes Manika to his home. Manika falls in love with Sania. But Sania's heart doesn't allow him to accept the Manka's offer as Manika belongs to a higher caste. Sania, in the meantime tries to find out suitable match for Manika and finds a docter, who comes to the village for the treatment for plague diseases as the village effected by plague. The doctor agrees to marry Manika and leaves the town to get his family's approval. But days passes away, the doctor doesn't return. All the villagers in the village complains of Sania and Manika leaving together. Manika doesn't bear all the blames made by the villager and vanishes. Sanu can not control himself and become insane.

Lakhipur is a small community along the river banks of the holy river Ganges, where Sonu lives with his ailing mother. One day he rescues a woman named Geeta and brings her home with him. He and his mom look after her while she recuperates and find out that she comes from a wealthy family. When she gets better, he takes her home, only to find out that she is no longer welcome there by her paternal uncle and his wife, Ramkali, leaving him with no alternative but to take her home with him. His mom would like Geeta to get married to Sonu, but before she could arrange this, she passes away, leaving Sonu and Geeta to live together - and being shunned by the entire community - who would like Geeta to leave. Sonu then starts to find a suitable groom for her, and does find one when a doctor comes to their community to treat victims of plague, the doctor agrees to marry Geeta, but on the day of the marriage does not show up. A distraught Sonu must now find why the doctor did not fulfill his promise - in the midst of the community threatening to boycott him and possibly burning his brand new boat.

Brij Mohan (Nitin Sethi) leaves his home in village to live in Bombay. His mother (Durga Khote) prefers to stay alone in their palatial home. Brij gets married. His wife gives birth and passes away soon after. After few years, Brij is an established businessman and his son Montu (Satyajeet) is studying final year in school. He asks Montu to visit his grandmother which he agrees reluctantly provided his friends accompany him. The group is besotted with many problems when they reach the village. His friends return to Bombay, leaving Montu with his grandmother. Montu becomes friends with a precocious village girl Gauri (Nameeta Chandra), an orphan living with her cruel aunt, and two equally cruel cousin sisters. Montu and Gauri's friendship blossoms and they meet regularly. He also meets a struggling farmer Balram (Arun Govil), his mother (Leela Mishra), and his fiancee Kanak (Abha Dhulia). Balram would like to go to city, earn money for his marriage which his mother refuses. Against his expectations, Montu finds village life interesting and promises his grandmother to return the next year.

Arun Roy (Prosenjit Chatterjee), a police sub-inspector stopped the car of Indrajit a political leader and brother to the Superintendent of Police, Balaram Babu. Arun Roy was suspended from his job due to the incident. Indrajit, Balaram Babu, and their younger brother, Arjun, maintain informal control over the area. Arun Roy's father, Bhabani Roy, was a police constable who also was suspended from his job for exposing Balaram. Arun Roy fell in love with a college student named Trisha Wesmen, whose father was a journalist. To take revenge for his father's insult, Arun Roy made a plan with his friend Hitler to stage Balaram as madman. They were successful, and Balaram was suspended. A new Superintendent of Police, Sukhomoy, took charge and supported Arun Roy. Indrajit, Arjun, and Balaram tried several times to stop Arun Roy in preventing their different illegal business and failed due to support from the state ministry. Arun later arrested the three of them for different crimes.
